Sacred Heart, KHSAA, and the State Tennis Tourney

Featured Replies

I teach at a Kentucky high school and our AP dates all fell between May 2-12. If what others have said is true regarding a nationwide set date, then it would appear that the KHSAA choosing to play tennis the following week was a pretty good plan. They can't help it that Sacred Heart's students were having to make up tests because of another issue.

The schedule is from May 2 to May 13 . It just depends on what test you are taking.

Late testing is May 18 to 20.

Did something prevent them from taking it yesterday? Was that the IB test?

The other "issue" was also a nationwide academic standardize test and the KHSAA still scheduled a state athletic championship during the school day and an AP testing window.

So why is there only complaints coming from Sacred Heart and none of the other 276 schools in Kentucky? I have empathy for the plight of Sacred Heart, but at the same time, trying to schedule an event around the demands of close to 300 schools is next to impossible. At some point it just stinks but you must move forward.

I would be curious to hear the theory of scheduling spring championships. Could the tennis tourney be next week?

My understanding is that a given AP test is assigned a specific date (both for the initial date and the late testing date), so they have to take it when it was scheduled. Is that what you are asking?

My guess is the number of schools who have an IB program is limited and therefore the number of kids put in this position is a very very small pool.

I thought maybe the late testing was not as regimented as far as time as the regular testing period. I can't tell from the AP site.

I'd be surprised if there are 10 IB programs. Holmes used to. Not sure if they still do.

It is very specific too.

So that gets back to issue of KHSAA scheduling. What harm/issues/challenges would it cause to start all state tourneys after the testing period?

That still gets away from the original debate - shuffling this year's schedule to accommodate students.

They've been talking about this on the radio and the fact that some of the same girls had to choose between playing in the State Championship or walking in graduation.

To start with graduation, no way the KHSAA should or could plan event around every graduation in the state. Not to mention, you don't know who is going to make a championship game when the season starts. If a state championship happens to fall on graduation day, so be it. You have to make that choice as a student athlete, it's not the KHSAA's job to work around that, IMO.

As for the national testing, that's a little different. I might be able to see some justification for trying to schedule around that, but if there are multiple opportunities to take said tests, I again don't think it's the KHSAA's job to worry about scheduling around it.

I'd guess scheduling state tennis has to do with availability of the UK tennis center.

What do they have 6 sports in the spring for Championships?

Archery - In April

Bass Fishing - First Week of May

Track - Memorial day weekend

Tennis - Week before Memorial Day

Softball - June

Baseball - June

Is there a reason they couldn't just shift the whole schedule later in the day? It looks like they finish early afternoon.

The second round singles matches have start times of 1, 2:15, and 3:30. There are also first round doubles matches at the same location that take place in between the singles rounds, and second round doubles matches that begin at 4:30. You'd be pushing a lot of matches several hours back to accommodate those couple girls taking the AP exam. 7:30 start times for those doubles matches could run into lighting issues.

The easy answer is to move the tennis championship to the first week of June like at least 2 other sports in the Spring (softball / baseball).

UK facility should be freed up, AP tests over, graduation done (in most cases) and you fit it all in.

It's curious that some on here think the KHSAA has enough vision to understand this conflict....they can't even figure out how to play at least 1 state championship on a regulation field, how could we possibly expect them to conjure up a solution for tennis ?
