Bengals tried to claim Zach Mettenberger

Nothing wrong with putting them in a situation to get some really good draft picks.

Anytime you are messing with your QB situation you have to be ultra careful.

In college, I'd have said that Mettenberg was the better pro prospect. Who would trade for McCarron that wouldn't just cut out the middle man and claim Zach off waivers.

I would say most NFL teams have different feelings on who is actually better now.

What does that say about our current QB situation?

With Dalton I don't think it means a thing but does that mean the Bengals are somewhat interested in trading MCcarron to the highest bidder? I can't imagine it meaning anything but that. What do you think?

Bengals and Giants tried to claim Zach Mettenberger | ProFootballTalk

IMO its pretty simple. The Bengals have been really good lately at thinking ahead. Adding him would have had nothing to do with trying to trade McCarron this year. It would have been to have Mettenberger around all year this year and then have him become the backup in 2017 and already have a full year under his belt in the system. I don't think the Bengals had or have any attention to trade McCarron this year. Its hard enough for teams to have a good starting QB, much less a good backup you can win with. With McCarron they have that, but they also know after 2017 they will lose him, so this will be McCarron's last year with the Bengals and will be trade next off season unless Dalton suffers a severe career threatening injury this year or somehow regresses and sucks.

Sounds like there might be some questions surrounding Dalton's recovery, and the Bengals are looking for an experienced backup for McCarron.

Could it mean that they were just trying to possibly prevent someone like the Steelers from being able to grab him?

In retrospect, maybe the Steelers didn't go after him anyway, but they don't know that. Heck I try to do that in my fantasy league lol.

I don't know the details of waivers but if there's no cost involved, why wouldn't you attempt the claim? Frankly, if your existing QB's aren't up to the competition you have the wrong people anyway.

If he could make it a competition, we have the wrong people.

If they didn't think he could compete for a backup position I can't imagine why they would have tried to claim him.

I agree. What I am saying is that if we are this close to being elite, and this guy actually challenges our QB...then we really weren't that close to being as elite as thought.

I wasn't thinking competition for Dalton, just that they must have seen him as a backup competing with AJ.

Do we know how long AJ is under contract and if the Bengals can extend him a year?

I still think the claim was made to give the Bengals the ability to trade AJ if the offer was right and still have someone that could get the Bengals through a game or two if Dalton goes down again.

I doubt very much they even see him as a backup to AJ, and there would be basically no competition for the backup spot. The only thing I think they were thinking, was they know McCarron will be gone after the 2017 season, so they will trade him next off season. So might as well try to get a guy in here to the #3 QB this year and have a year under his belt before becoming the backup QB in 2017. Its planning ahead, and the Bengals have become really good at that.
