Marijuana Dispensary Seeks Naming Rights For Mile High Stadium

Featured Replies

DENVER (CBS4) – The recent bankruptcy filing by Sports Authority has raised questions about possibly renaming the stadium the Broncos play in, and a marijuana company is one such interested buyer.

Native Roots is one of Colorado’s largest dispensaries. It expanded from one to 14 stores over the last year. The marijuana dispensary chain said they are fully ready to make a multi-million dollar commitment if the contract between Sports Authority Field at Mile High and Sports Authority ever ends.

Via the Denver Post, the Broncos argued in court filings that the company can’t transfer the naming rights without written consent. Among other things, the team cites a potential violation of league rules arising from the transfer.

Ultimately, the decision could be made by a bankruptcy court. And the bankruptcy court could, in theory, ignore the team’s wishes and sell the rights to, for example, a marijuana dispensary. Or to a business that those who have consumed marijuana may frequent, even if the name is a little crass.

Alternative color uniform day in Denver could be something else.

Or, you could have the Las Vegas Raiders in town to play in Native Roots Stadium.

Would they just change the name back to "Mile High" if they get the naming rights?

You couldn't script this any better!

I agree, Denver is getting all whatever about it but if I were them I would jump on it. Of course, at Denver's price. They will pay extra.

I have long loathed the practice of selling stadium naming rights to corporate entities (I share similar feelings about corporate names for college bowls). With the NFL playing such a big role in this distasteful practice, I think it's wholly appropriate to have it thrown back at them in the form of less-than-desirable corporate names adorning their stadiums.

Wouldn't it be great if the new LA Rams stadium was Vivid Stadium or Wicked Stadium?

Native Roots Mile High Stadium.

I love it. Im hungry too now.

I doubt the NFL would approve of a tobacco company purchasing the naming rights for an NFL stadium. Same rule should apply here.

Why?

Why what? Why do I doubt the NFL would approve of tobacco companies? or why should marijuana businesses be treated the same as tobacco companies?

Tobacco has many associated health risks. It's not PC. Government hates tobacco companies. Can't advertise on TV, etc.

Marijuana, if smoked, would have similar health risks. Plus, it is a rather seedy business at this point in America.

Yes it does. Scientifically proven when you smoke it causes you to get hungry. When you are hungry, you eat a bunch of junk foods. Junk foods are filled with very bad chemicals. Very bad chemicals cause cancer.

I am surprised you didn't know this.

The first 300 through the gate will receive a Bronco Bong. Fill it up at the concession stand. What a place!

Just think if they hired Tebow back to hand out the Bronco Bongs.
