Paying for a meal in a group

Featured Replies

A reply by Jumperdad in the Chicago thread got me thinking. Do any of you guys play credit card bingo when dining in a group. We sometimes have 5 or 6 guys that go out for dinner/drinks. When the bill comes, we all throw our credit cards in a hat and have the waitress pull a card out and they have to pay for the whole meal. And we have done it with a $50 total bill up to a $600 tab.

Anyone else do something different when paying in a group?

There's no way you could convince me to do that. What's the reasoning or rationale for something like that?

I never give any card to anyone in the food service industry. # one place for identy thief.

Always pay cash when eating/drinking out.

So if I have a salad and an iced tea but my buddy across the table has the surf n turf with 3 bourbons, there's no way I'm putting my credit card in nor am I splitting the bill equally between all parties.

We always ballpark our meals, not a big deal but the largest group I've been with in the past 10 years is 9 or so and everyone in the group wants to pay more than their share. That's a big difference than 30 years ago when we all had young families.

Apparently, I eat with a bunch of degenerate gamblers! I will say the $600 only happened once and I am very glad I didn't have to pay.

I've never done the credit card bingo before. Pay for your own lunch. :lol2: I will pay for lunch if it's business related for write off purposes.

It's pretty easy for a server to split the bill these days.

If I'm rich then yeah, its fun.

But I'm poor and no way I do it.

I always pay with credit card, build up my Disney Dollar

When I'm out with my in laws it's often a big game as to who will pay for the bill. Side deals with waitresses, extra tips, secret handing over of credit cards all take place in order to pay the bill. My in laws have done so much for my family, that I like to give back whenever I can and if I can steal a few dinner tabs every year, I feel better. But that's only paying for an extra couple entrees and drinks and rarely costs me more than $75 extra. My friends drink and eat way too much for me to pay for 1/2 dozen or more of them to eat fill their gullets in my tab. If it's couples night, we always Get separate checks.

Or you get it free. You may never have to pay for a meal with your friends again.

We have done it before. Do it for work a lot to see who has to expense it. Last week in Hilton Head it was the fight to see who would pick up the tab. We all tried. Ate out 1-2 meals per day and the trips to the liquor store and grocery stores were always a quick draw to see who could pick it up. Had the pleasure of staying at a buddies amazing house and he had the nerve to pick up a $200 liquor tab and dinner the last night. I know that one wasn't cheap. We try to pick up all of his meals.

Not sure how I came out for the week had we split evenly. Really didn't matter. It was all good with great friends.

My mother-in-law is sneaky and has already figured out a way to cover the bill before we even sit down to eat. She is the best!
