Holmes 2016

Featured Replies

It seems Holmes will start Construction on the new filed sometimes in September, just got my schedule and most of there home games will be played at Lloyd, teams such as Newport was scheduled at home will be played at Newport, also Holmes has around 40 players at this time practicing.

I heard the same. Not sure why Lloyd was the choice to play home games, seems like TMC would have been better for Friday night since TMC plays Saturday.

Those 40 players include freshmen? If we have 40 varsity and JV players, that is a step forward. But if that is with freshmen, I would have deep concerns. Our program has not had good numbers in years. I would be thrilled if the 40 players are all sophomores, juniors, seniors. I know we lost some very good players from our senior class.

Not sure if even going the route Scott has gone the last few years would help rescue Holmes' program.

What does this mean? I'm confused? Elaborate.

Just thought if the Bulldogs had some decent success with their schedule, they might get more interest in the program therefore more guys coming out for football. But I'm not so sure about it given the financial and social issues that may affect some of the guys.

Holmes can only have success if enough players come out for the team. Until they have around 50 players in the top three grades, it's tough to compete in their district. Not sure what has happened to cause the apathy for Holmes football. Back when I played at Holmes, numbers were never a problem. We had other issues, but we always had plenty of players. Not the case the past 15 years or so. Numbers just are not good.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with enrollment numbers. Haven't the numbers at Holmes been dropping or just not increasing for quite a while? "Apathy", you hit nail on head there.

I kind of violated the rule of constructive criticism on the original post. Sorry for that. I'm sure Holmes has the talent walking the halls but for whatever reason they're not interested in football.

Yes Holmes enrollment is way down from the 70s thru the 90s, a good example, I graduated in the 70s and had over 400 in our senior class, this past year the senior class had around 150, that is a considerable drop.

I think Holy Cross is playing at Thomas More this year. Between HC and TMC, I'm guessing there aren't many open dates left for Holmes.

This is the problem. When I played football at Holmes back in the '70s, we always had at least 50 players on the varsity of sophomores, juniors and seniors. We actually had freshman team with over 30 players when I was a junior. I don't know what has happened to the interest and numbers. Holmes loses 11 seniors from that 26 total you mentioned. Not a good sign. Luckily we play Newport (17 players as of last month) and Bellevue (19 players as of last month). Those may be our only wins this season.

Where do you come up with your info? Crystal ball? Dreams?

OK, that was a month ago. How many are out for the VARSITY, not the freshmen team? Or do they have enough to field a freshmen team?

Is Wiggins or Chevington playing for the Newport football team this year?

There is no freshman team, so the varsity team has anywhere from 25-30 depending on the day.

I think the enrollment from 69 - 74/75 were pretty good numbers.

I was told 19 varsity players a month ago. NKYknowitall basically confirms that by saying they have no freshmen team and only 25-30 players total counting freshmen. So if they have, let's say, 10 freshmen, that leaves 20 upperclass players total. I could care less how many they have as long as Holmes beats them.
