Holmes 2016

Featured Replies

Holmes' numbers being down has a lot to do with kids only wanting to focus on one sport, as well.

Without basketball kids coming out regularly like they were up until around 06-07, numbers have continued to drop over the years.

Several kids on the hardwood these past few years that could have helped the football team as well for the simple fact that they were so athletic. Markel McClendon is a perfect example. Varsity contributor at Holy Cross as a 9th grader on the state title team but never played football again after transferring to Holmes.

This is all correct. I can understand if a basketball player is a no-doubt college player concentrating on that sport only, but most of the Holmes basketball players are not college prospects. In the 1970s and 1980s, there were many who played both sports. A player like James Hayes in the early 1990s excelled at both sports, was arguably the best football player in the area as a junior and senior. Very disheartening to see the numbers continue to drop at Holmes for football, but all those points are spot-on.
