Here is a thought...... why not jump up to the D1 conference? It seems that this would be the most logical move. With the exception of boys basketball all the other sports would be able to compete at the D1 level and given time so will basketball. To me it seems with a number of teams in the D2 conference being at a class a level in size (which we all know how found RCC is of the All A) and due to Highlands current enrollment this would be best for all. I would have to say in the voting that the A size schools tend to vote differently for each other just due to the fact that they see each other more often... IMO. This would also provide the challenge that Coach Coffey is looking for to challenge his teams to get them ready for the post season run, again IMO. I realize that all sports must make the jump not just softball, but I think this would be best for all the programs at Highlands. This may get the proper awards to the deserving players that may be omitted and in a comparable conference of alike schools may just solve the problem.:idunno:

The NKY Coach's association chose a few years back to align the awards with the conference alignment. Up until about 3 years ago, all teams were in one bucket. I do not agree with the alignment. It waters down the award in my opinion. We need a first and second team. With Honorable Mentions. So saying to "move up" really doesn't apply here. It's just where the committee chose to put HHS. It has nothing to do with who you play.

 

But on the other hand, if you're saying "be classified in with the teams that see you more" then I get it. We only played half (7) of the schools in the lower two divisions and 4 of them are in our district. If you're saying we'd likely get more votes playing up, I tend to agree with you. We could request the committee consider us D1 when voting I assume.

 

As for the real conference play...in my opinion it's time to retire it. No one really pays attention to it any longer and it requires teams to play other teams that they may never put on their schedule otherwise. I'm just not sure what value the NKAC has any longer. Maybe I just don't understand it enough. Heck, we won the conference the one year and the only reason I knew it was because I saw it somewhere. I had no idea there was something to even win!

My 2 cents is this. This group that puts this on has the best interest of the players at heart. They work with the information provided them. I believe their mission is to promote softball and recognize as best they can. The vote is what it is. If it ends up with co-players of the year, great for both players. Some have a different opinion on that but not I. It didn't take anything away from either player. The only thing that has bothered me about the whole voting process was the time Smith was black balled. As far as the timing, it seems this year it was later and that makes it better. It needs to be completed before districts which this year timing is perfect. The only thing that could be altered would be to only send in stats against NKY teams. But from what I have heard, it's hard enough to get stats from everyone as it is, much less trying to separate only the NKY stats.

 

As far as playing up in competition, Highlands does that as well as anyone. Have they taken a couple lumps along the way, sure. But if you told me they would be able to compete against teams like Bullit East (lost 4-3 against Roby louisville commit) Greenwood win and Woodford lost 6-0 against their #1 who signed with UK, at the beginning of the year I would have said no way.

Interesting thing is, the girls love playing in those games. Do they like taking a loss, absolutly not but they go into each with the thought that they can compete.

For Highlands, this is a special team. While the reason behind the schedule is to prepare the ladies for tourney time, I believe in my DDs case, it will help her more next year at the next level. She has had the opportunity to face quite a few future D1 level pitchers over the last couple years between HS ball and travel ball and that is always good.

The sad thing is that you guys have evidently forget one thing! It's a popularity contest Not a best player award! First the vote is taken way before the seasons midway point! Second all the coaches don't take it serious (the weekly standing prove that) even if they wanted too they don't get to see all the players and then most would still vote to get certain kids notarity and/or they hold grudges against others!

 

It only takes one coach black balling a kid for whatever reason not giving her any points and the system doesn't work. A couple years ago there was a tie for player of year where it should of been a land slide and the co player of the year wasn't even best player on her team.

 

There is a reason we have to do the voting when we do......

 

1. If we wait until the season is over (State Tourney doesn't end until 2nd week in June), how many girls to you think would show up for an Awards Banquet? My guess it would be poorly attended. Having it the day before Districts start, assures us that all the girls nominated are recognized among all of their peers.

 

2. Since I'm in charge of this operation I pushed the date of when stats needed to be turned into me (May 8th, only two full weeks left in the season), as to give all the players more games to build resumes for nomination and consideration by other coaches. The problem is getting the nominations and stats to me in a timely fashion. At our 1st two coaches meetings I let all the coaches know to stay on top of stat entry and the date that I needed the nominees and stats. Two weeks before the deadline I sent everyone a reminder, a week later I sent another reminder.

 

Nominees and stats were due Sunday May 8th by 6:00 P.M., if I didn't have them by 6:00, all players nominated after would only be Honorable Mention (granted, I would NEVER do that to any deserving players, because the coach was tardy in getting me their info). At 7:30 P.M. that night, I sent a text to two coaches, (this is verbatim) "Looks like all the players from----- and -----are going to dominate the Honorable Mention category, this should make for some fun reading on BGP, now send me your stats and nominees".

 

If I were assured that I would get the info in a timely manner I would push the date up a week. The time that I devote to this and the detail I put into it, most would not even bother. However, these young ladies deserve our best as coaches, since we expect the best out of them.

 

The vast majority of coaches take this process serious, and on occasion it is not uncommon for fellow coaches to call one another to seek their counsel on players they may not be familiar with. Have players been "black-balled" as you stated? It certainly as looked like that, all I can say is, "shame on coaches that would do such a thing".

 

Bottomline is, the NKSCA is working hard to promote and recognize all these young ladies in the best possible manner.

 

I think I've said enough, I hope I don't get impeached now.

LB, You could never be questioned as "saying too much" on the topic of softball. As noted by the time of your post (after an extra inning game no less) and time you spend with groups like the NKSCA, you are unquestionably the best advocate of girls softball !

With regard to this process and list, it is the same as any other in that it cannot be perfect and someone will always have a contrary opinion......and that's OK. I'll just say thank you for creating a way to recognize girls playing HS softball !

Softball awards will usually be given to the top pitchers. There is a reason for that. Your chances over the course of a season of winning begins and end with pitching. Without it great defense and even hitting won't overcome bad pitching in the long haul.

 

After pitching its all about hitting and the ability to hit one out at anytime is paramount. It takes on average 3 singles to get one run. A power hitter takes one pitch and boom there's a run maybe more. Based on that I think the player in the year should be hands down Bailey Spencer. Without her Graybill could have been playing at 100%, Dutcher who has had a career year wouldn't have mattered without Spencer in the circle.

We would have won a lot of games but not all the close ones we did win.
