May 17, 201610 yr So....if I read the law correctly and I read the letter about switching parties from MaryEllen Allen it seems there is a disconnect. Ms. Allen apparently sent letters to people switching parties after December 31, 2015 that they could not vote in the partisan primary. The letter starts: "Dear xxxxxx, The statewide voter registration system indicates that your party affliiation changed on or after January 1, 2016. Under Kentucky law, all persons who want to vote in the Democratic Party's or the Republican Party's primary election must have changed their party affiliation by December 31, 2015. (it goes on from there)..." According to this link the last day register (and I assume switch parties) is actually April 18th. http://www.sos.ky.gov/elections/Documents/2016%20Election%20Calendar.pdf The governing law is cited as at this link - paragraph 2 as noted in the above link dates. http://www.lrc.ky.gov/statutes/statute.aspx?id=27298 There are people here who know this a lot better. Did Ms. Allen send out incorrect letters?

KRS 116.055 http://www.lrc.ky.gov/statutes/statute.aspx?id=27306 in addition, he shall be a registered member of the party in whose primary election he seeks to vote, and shall have been registered as a member of that party on December 31 immediately preceding the primary election, or, in the case of new registrations made after December 31 immediately preceding the primary election, he shall have registered and remained registered as a member of that party. Since you can register as a new voter and join a party to vote in a primary four weeks before a primary election it would seem this is a difficult law to enforce. It did not prevent some voting today - that is for sure.
