Greatest Player to Never Reach Playoffs?

Featured Replies

Is Joe Thomas, LT for the Cleveland Browns, the greatest player to never make the playoffs?

He is heading into his 10th season having been named as first-team All-Pro 6 times, 9 times to the Pro Bowl, and has experienced just 1 winning season, his rookie year, 2007, and never made it to the playoffs. Cleveland lost that year in the last game of the season to the Bengals so the Steelers went into the playoffs ahead of them. I sat in the end zone amongst Bengals fans and right beside a Steelers fan who was cheering for the Bengals that day. What a miserable day as I watched Browns QB Derek Anderson miss open receivers all day and had to listen to the Steelers' fan gloat. I wanted to throw up. But I digress.

Thomas has had a Hall of Fame worthy career but hasn't been to the playoffs. What other greats have labored so long with so much personal achievement yet never had an opportunity to play in a post season game?

Cleveland.com has an article comparing Thomas' career to such players as Tony Gonzalez, Chargers O-Lineman Ron Mix, Lineman Randall McDaniel (Vikings), and RB Barry Sanders. But all of those greats played in the playoffs at least once and actually multiple times.

Junior Seau played 20 seasons and made it to the playoffs 3 times with San Diego and to the Super Bowl his last season with New England.

Maybe the only great who can "feel Thomas' pain" is a baseball player. The great Ernie Banks played 19 seasons for the Chicago Cubs and never made the playoffs.

Can you think of any football greats who compare to Thomas' misery?

^ two great ones. Too bad Sayers' career was shortened by injury. Loved to watch him run the ball. And Butkus inspired me as a young kid playing football.

Archie Manning?

Archie Manning?

I've often found Archie's "greatness" on the field to be highly dubious.

Or hes one of the stupidest for resigning with Cleveland and staying there.

Fair point.

What about one of the old Cardinals like Larry Wilson or Dan Dierdorf? They also had a nice two way player named Roy Green. Not sure if they ever made playoffs in late 60s or 70s.

The first name that came to my mind was Alex Karras. But I just read in his only playoff game the Lions lost 5-0 to Cowboys which was Karras' last NFL game.

Did Willie Anderson make the playoffs with the Ravens? He was so underrated while with the Bengals.

Roy Green played in the 80's and early 90's and made the playoffs as a member of the Eagles.

Dierdorf and the Cardinals made the playoffs in 1974 and 1975

I don't think the Cardinals made the playoff's during Wilson's career.

A distant thirdxwith Cooper in the rear.
