If you do a Google search and review the KHSAA tax returns, one quickly recognizes the total dependency of the organization on both the Boys and Girls Sweet Sixteen tournaments for continued viability. With reserves being progressively depleted and no immediate reversal in sight, the Board of Directors has certainly got to be operating in alarm mode (or they should be). This problem simply cannot be ignored and yes there are a myriad of factors, but the KHSAA must resurrect our Sweet Sixteens.

Are their improvements that can be made. Sure. And you do have to keep evolving and trying new thing. But to say the event is in crisis because they've made some changes that you don't like is a bit of a stretch.

First look at the datings of your returns, they do not reflect the last 3 state tournaments because of fiscal year filings. Secondly scroll downward to the event schedulings and you will see that the football and basketball playoffs are the sources that must carry the other nearly $2million in KHSAA operational expenses annually. Doesn't take a financial analysts to see the cash cows are dying. This situation meets all business definitions of a crisis, and must be reversed or the fincial viability of the entire KHSAA has to be reinvented.

Go back and look at who was playing and where they are from and you will be shocked at last four year trends. It is solvable by people that disassociate with excuses and are prepared to open their minds. They are called Cris Management in business, and the nature of most posts on this thread suggests most are totally unfamiliar with the concept and provide little willingness to do anything but stick their head in the sand. Typical suggestions have been why things won't work; rather then a Strategic Approach that is time and true proven in business. It is about the process, where the answers will and can be found.

 

Can you give us an example of what they might suggest? Cause I don't see how they are going to make people show up if their school isn't involved?

You have a valid point, but I guess I was trying to say that the format just seems boring too because I am so used to the semi's being on Saturday morning and championship being Saturday night which made it seem more exciting than the format currently in place.

Because a 4 team regional with 3 games would be boring. You would make less money, and less attendance. And I love having district rematches: Augusta/Mason, CovCath/Holmes.

 

District championship rematches in the region title game seem to always pack an extra oomph of excitement.

Madison Central on Sunday that first year was pretty exciting, and Richmond being so close helped that.

 

Overall, however, I've talked to a lot of people who don't much care for it and clear out of town on Sunday morning and skip the finals. I did so this year as well.

 

Personally, I always enjoyed the Saturday morning semifinals and Saturday night finals as it seemed to keep downtown Lex buzzing all day long, with folks gathering around TVs in between to watch NCAA games.

Agree 100%...For folks driving in from out of town, the semis/finals one day format is much more convenient. And I think it creates a buzz that keeps people interested.

I had a lot of friends that would take their sons up just for Saturday's games. They were able to watch the semifinals and championship games and go back home that night without having to get a hotel room. I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of father-son outings that stopped because of the new format taking too much of a toll on their schedule and wallet.

I would like to see it go back to semifinals and finals all on Saturday.
