March 16, 201610 yr Mike Tranghese hired as consultant by SEC to save hoops “As a conference, we seek continuing improvement in the national competitive success of our men’s basketball programs,” Sankey said in the league release. “Mike’s knowledge and experience will be an asset for me, our staff and the athletics programs of the SEC as we accelerate our men’s basketball enhancement efforts.” With the SEC Basketball coming up small again this year on the national stage will this hiring help?
March 16, 201610 yr Author IMO the SEC has a chance to take a step up in the next couple of years. As a whole (Johnny Jones not with standing) I think Fox, Johnson, Pearl, Howland, Barnes, Martin, B Kennedy and Cal (and even Stallings) are as solid of a group as the SEC has had.
March 16, 201610 yr Mike is a good guy. Very creative. I had the pleasure of working with him several years ago. He should help!
March 16, 201610 yr What kind of consulting work is he going to do to help improve the quality of play in the SEC? Is he going to help teams not named Kentucky recruit better talent?
March 16, 201610 yr @MentschTrachtGottLacht, think the SEC hiring the guy who helped make the real Big East so strong will help? Edit: Don't know why I can't tag you, I copy and pasted your name. Copied from the Vandy thrashing thread.
March 16, 201610 yr His name is just too difficult. :lol2: I know right? I could understand if I typed it out. His name is breaking the BGP processes.

I think they've already gotten a really good start with the names you mention. I think we saw a real bump in the level of coaching hires last year thanks in part to that big influx of cash from the SEC Network, I'm sure. They've got enough money now to splurge on things other than football.
March 16, 201610 yr What kind of consulting work is he going to do to help improve the quality of play in the SEC? Is he going to help teams not named Kentucky recruit better talent? My thoughts as well. I don't see him being a factor one way or the other.(see: Shaheen)
March 17, 201610 yr Copied from the Vandy thrashing thread. This is a well-intentioned idea, but doesn't amount too much. He will meet with the coaches and AD's at a posh Florida resort in late Spring, they'll talk about making hoops matter, scheduling tactics, best practices, but nothing happens unless schools get serious about it.

March 17, 201610 yr Does the SEC fan base really care about basketball aside from Kentucky? Maybe they don't. Therein explains a great deal.

What would that look like...New Arenas...High Profile Coaches...Better out of conf schedules? What do the schools need to do to "Get Serious" about basketball?

I just had a VERY long post in reply to this, hit the back button my mistake on my phone and lost the whole thing. Too torqued off to type it again now.
