First practice to be moved to August 1st?

Featured Replies

Why are 2 a days sacrosanct? After being part of HS football for 20+ years I have to say that I think their value is highly over rated.

I have to agree about 2 a day practices. They have become alsmost non existent in college. The NCAA only allows a double practice every other day and the second practice is limited to helmets and shoulder pads.

Personally I would love to see things moved back a little. And I also agree that it should apply to all sports. I remember when I played football, when the season ended, we got two weeks off before we had to start wrestling practice and the same was true for those who played basketball.

As far as the heat factor and the two a days. I don't think moving things back needs to be addressed. It is the coaches responsibility to take care of his kids. If it is to hot, practice accordingly. The problem is when coaches push the limit for the sake of thinking they are missing some important part of their practice or game plan to get ready for the opener. They have to remember the most important part is the players and their safety.

When I played, practice started on August 1st and had two a days that first week and camp the second week. I also played for a "small school". It seemed from my point of view that we were well prepared for the first game. My coach did the best with what he was dealt and coached us up every chance he got. Sometimes it is the quality of instruction of the coaches, not the quantity!

This is not what the state needs. We need more time of organized instruction. I do understand the heat issues but waiting until Aug. 1st is not the answer.

I would love to see the start of practice moved back. The skill players virtually have two weeks of practice and multiple games in May/June due to 7 on 7. Weightlifting three times a week every week except the dead period along with various football camps players attend leaves little down time. If a player takes a part time job to earn a little spending money it gets to where burn out becomes a real problem.

I will be shocked if the opening of the regular season is bumped back more than a week, especially given the KHSAA's current mindset that as many teams as possible should make the playoffs.

With the turf at Papa Johns they can play into the third week of December.

I am forced to disagree with my fellow posters sentiments. I feel practice should be allowed at the current time or perhaps earlier. I must qualify that statement. I feel coaches should be allowed to work with those who wish to attend sessions throughout the summer. I can't say that the whole team should be "forced to show up or be punished" but if a QB and some skill player "choose" to show up, it should not be discouraged.

Think about it. Every state in the country outside of Kentucky and Alaska do it, and they have no problems with it.

I think the heat is a real concern.

You can wear helmets and have 7 on 7's in July, but the pads stay off until August 1st.

Thanks for agreeing and yes I am more familar with the smaller schools and how all the different seasons and practices tend to spread a kid a little thin over the course of the summer. It has a dramatic effect on the smaller schools because more of these kids are needed to play 2 and 3 sports where in a larger school a kid can concentrate all his energy in one sport if he wishes and not have it hurt the other programs that he chooses to not play. Larger schools obviously have more kids and the overlapping of seasons doesn't have quite the effect that it would at a smaller school. Hope I explained myself..maybe you could explain yourself..;)

I understand your perspective, I was just mentioning that that situation exists plenty at the bigger schools also.

I think it is a great idea and would love to see it happen. Kids are being pulled in to many directions as it is especially at smaller schools. Some play summer baseball and others have basketball before the dead period begins along with conditioning for football. Lets get the different sports back into their respective seasons please. Baseball (Spring and Summer) Football (August thru mid November) and basketball (Thanksgiving thru mid March)

Amen, part deux!

I can't say that the whole team should be "forced to show up or be punished" but if a QB and some skill player "choose" to show up, it should not be discouraged.

Anyone who has any real knowlege of sports and coach-speak knows that there is no such thing as "voluntary" workouts. Off season weight training and conditioning can not be mandated right now but the reality of the situation is different. If you allow "voluntary" workouts then you can bet as sure as the sun rises in the east that someone somewhere will misuse that time. We need to let the kids have more time, not take more of it from them.
