Now or Never For Newport Central Catholic?

Featured Replies

As I recall, the Middle School team with Hall / Pangallo, et al was very good (not sure which school?). It seems many were saying they would lead NCC with great results. I know they beat the CCH trio (Mayer/Ruthsatz/Lenihan) a few times (8th grade). Is that class still in tact? (I am not overly familiar with the NCC guys). If so, the idea of a well-balanced team with a lot of experience together, may better serve the program than recent years with more individual type star players.

Holy Trinity (Newport)

The starting 5 for that Holy Trinity team

Hall - Varsity NewCath

Pangallo - Varsity NewCath

McDaniel - JV/Varsity NewCath

Iles - JV/Varsity NewCath

Posey - Varsity Highlands

NewCath will always have good players. Very good school, good coaches, good people. It is a school parents want their kids to attend. I have a 11 year old son who I will send to either Holy Cross or NewCath because I know academics are great and sports are taught the right way.

No Covington Catholic option?

No Covington Catholic option?

We have ties to both Holy Cross and NewCath. CovCath is also a great school. Has to do with family connections with Holy Cross and NewCath.

Gotcha. Good communities.

Just got a note from someone that NewCath has only won the Region twice since 1975? Wow, if that is correct that shocks the heck out of me. I would have missed that by a bunch.

I saw them win it once in the 70s when I was a kid. I think Ron Dawn was on the team. It was the year there was a huge brawl with Holmes that involved people in the stands. Region was at Conner that year.

I know holy trinity has two phenomenal 6th graders in Pangallo and Iles that are projected to be about 6'6" that are point guards that will be going to ncc! These two are going to be a treat to watch!

That is correct. But NewCath also won 2 or 3 consecutive regional titles under Coach John Gross in the early 70s. Dave "Elmer" Faust and Joe Devoto and Gary Devoto and Charlie Craddock led the Breds. Gross then surprisingly left for another coaching job and NewCath did not win another regional until about 2000.

Dave "Elmer" Faust is now the coach at St. Henry and does a great job. The Devoto brothers were great players for NewCath. I almost forgot Kenny Wilfong from that era, another fine basketball and baseball player!

A 6'6 Pangallo?

This years sophomore class as some very nice players that can fill it up and run the floor, also So. Brendan Luken adds some nice size to the mix. He goes about 6'4", and hearing he is projected to grow another 2' to 3' inches over the next year. The Frosh class is down compared to the NewCath frosh classes of the last who knows how many years, however I'm told the 7th & 8th graders projected to be on the "hill" in the next year or two will be pretty damn good. The cupboard is not bare on the "hill".

Do you mean the class is down, in numbers? I thought they had like 86 or 87 freshmen. How many do they usually get? I don't think they ever had a class over 100 in many, many years.

A 6'6 Pangallo?

Yes!! These two boys are going to be fun to watch! The Pangallo kid is already 5'"8 and the Iles boy is already 5'7"....

A 6'6 Pangallo?

Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it! :bunny:
