4 Phone Calls That Will Save You Money

1. The cable company - this is next on my list of things to evaluate as TWC has once again raised their rates and I'm now spending over $160 a month for TV and Internet.

2. The mortgage company

3. The credit card company

4. The insurance company - I already did this one...and I saved $43 per month by going with State Farm and dropping Progressive.

What is a good interest rate range for a car loan?

My rate is 3.82%

Is that good, bad, average?

That's roughly what I'm paying on my two car loans.

I think that's on the higher end, but nothing crazy. You could possibly look at refinancing it.

That was through the dealership. If it seems a little high, I'm going to look at refinancing it with my local credit union.

High based on what? Interest rates are based on your FICO score. Do you know what yours is?

Was it on a new car or used car? You're now asking a bank to loan you money on a used car. As a rule interest rates on used cars are higher than on new cars.

It is a 2013 SUV and my FICO score is 792.

1. Strong FICO score. Well done.

2. My guess is you bought that 2013 new?

3. I doubt you'll get a much better, if better at all, rate for a re-fi of a 3-yr-old asset.

Actually, I just bought it 2 weeks ago, so it's used.

Dead on. I would be surprised if you get anything below 3.99 on a used car.

Gotcha. You should check into the re-fi options but I doubt you'll get much lower. I'll be curious to see what you find.

I've never done a car refi, but don't you have to be a year into it?

I don't think so. I needed a new car back in 2009 after I totaled mine. Got the loan through Huntington. Got my insurance money that I used to make a large payment on it for the first payment and then turned around and refinanced it through State Farm at a much lower rate. Whole process was within the 1st 2 months I owned it.
