The $$$ Thread - Financial Advice

Featured Replies

I thought I would open a new thread for those of us who want to discuss boring stuff like money.

For starters, I have joined the Acorns app but am still waiting for my account to get approved. It's only been 1 business day since today is MLK Day, so hopefully I'll be up and running tomorrow.

Feel free to post anything financial in this thread - ways to save money, advice, tax info, cool apps, cool rewards programs, etc. etc.

I challenge everybody to do one thing. For 90 just write down every dollar you spend and what it was on. Not a budget, just a where is my money going. You might be surprised what you find out in 90 days.

This is one reason I've started getting more "financial" in thinking. I took a good hard look at my checking account and noted where my money was going.

Pay off unnecessary debt that has a large interest rate as soon as you can. It's common sense, I know, but some people don't seem to realize the amount of interest that they pay on credit cards and lines of credit.

I recommend paying off all debts smallest to largest.

Would you recommend that based on the amounts or based on the interest each one charges?

I do it by amounts regardless of interest. I just paid off two over the weekend and have 4 more to go.

It's easier to pay off the smaller ones so you will see results quicker, it keeps you motivated and aggressive in my opinion.

And makes it easier to roll the money you were spending on the smaller bills into the larger ones. It's like anything, get the easy stuff done and out of the way, and then you can focus on the harder stuff.

I'm hellbent on paying off either my student loans or my car in the next 2 years. I owe almost the same on both but I'm going to attack them aggressively. I'm tired of being in debt...especially for school.

Delayed gratification.

I know one thing. I'll be able to advise my kids a little better when they are off to college.

What is a good interest rate range for a car loan?

My rate is 3.82%

Is that good, bad, average?
