January 16, 201610 yr I put down Pergo Premium in my dining room this summer. I am absolutely in love with it. My dog's nails haven't damaged it at all.
January 16, 201610 yr Here's a not-so-good pic of the living room floors (pardon the lack of decor. This was from when I just moved in). The floors have obviously been stained over the years. And the color is uneven. But again, I love them.

January 16, 201610 yr This one was from around Christmas...I don't still have the tree up. :lol2: And again another model. This one shows one of the imperfections I mentioned. Despite what it looks like, the missing part of the planks are smooth-edged, no splinters or anything.

In fact, they are a large part of the character. I know that most of you would cringe, but given that life happens in homes, I personally would choose a flooring (if I were ever to be in the position Tootsie is in) that "lived" with my family. For instance, that one pic with the imperfection, if I looked at that as the person who who lived here when it happened, would have memories of what happened, whether it was kids, dogs, or whatever. Again...just me. I'm weird. I also dig scars.

That hearth, going back to your original question, If you are going to redo or replace it I would consider doing one of two things myself if it were mine. 1. Sand it down and try to stain it to match the floor, then finish it. This will be the cheapest route, but I am not sure how it will look and I almost think a contrasting color on it instead of "match" might look better. 2. If you replace it entirely, I'd go with a solid stone. You are probably talking $300-500 for the materials though. The tone would be up to you but with that white mantle work and dark floors, maybe something lighter like this...
January 18, 201610 yr Anyone have experience with bamboo? I personally do not, but I have a friend who has had it for about ten years. She LOVES it! It gets lots of traffic from the grandkids and still looks as good as the day she got it.

I do like the stone, but not sure it's in my budget for a while. I just want it to look like something other than a butcher block for sure.
