Windows 10 help

Featured Replies

Anyone familiar with Windows 10 on here? Specifically how to allocate an unallocated partition so that it can become part of the main Win10 partition?

To be more specific I'll explain a little more. A couple of years ago I bought an Intel NUC for the sole purpose of using it as a htpc. The NUC came with windows 7, but I never installed it. Instead I ran openelec (linux based) to run Kodi. Recently I decided to install windows 7, but wanted to dual boot with openelec. So i created a partition that I would be able to install openelec on after installing windows 7. After the install windows asked if I wanted a free upgrade to windows 10, so I decided to give it a try. I was able to install and run Kodi on windows 10 and it runs as smooth as it did on openelec, so now I have no need for the partition I created for openelec. But for the life of me I cannot get windows 10 to allow me to do anything with that partition other than format and give it a drive path, it will not allow me to delete it and move the unallocated space to the windows partition. Anyone have any ideas?

I cannot comprehend half of what you said.

Good luck though!

That makes two of us, hence my problem, lol!

Seriously though, I explained it as simply as I can while still trying to allow someone more computer literate than I to make sense of it all. Hopefully one of our computer guru's on here can offer up some idea's as to what I'm doing wrong, or if it's a windows problem.

Reboot the flux capacitor at mach 5 and you should be all set.

Start/All Apps/Windows Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management

You'll get the same tool you had in Window 7 for managing partitions.

Format the hard drive and install Windows 7 Professional :thumb:

My previous post was for Windows 10 Pro. Not sure if that is the same for the Home addition.

That's actually the method I've been attempting to use. The problem I am having is that when I delete the partition, it becomes unallocated space. So then I right click on my windows partition in an attempt to extend it, but the extend option is greyed out. The only thing I have had any luck with is formating the unallocated space to ntfs and creating another drive path. But what I am really trying to do is add that space to c:/ which is the windows drive path.

A side note is that when I originally created the partition I used a program called GParted, since I was using a linux based os at the time. Would that cause windows to not be able to do what I am trying to do?

I have thought about going back to Win7 Pro, but honestly I am not sure that would solve this problem. Truthfully, I really like Win10 Pro so far. The only two complaints I have with it is this issue and that when running multiple monitors I am only able to get it to clone the first monitor to the second monitor. With Win7 Pro I was able to use my tv to view media, while still having the ability to run the desktop on a pc monitor. That option is either gone, or I just haven't found the proper settings to make it work yet.

I will tell you, it can be done. I ran into this exact situation about a month ago when I purchased a solid state drive and had to fix up my hard disk drive. When I get home tonight I will see what I did.

Now that I think about it, I think I got very frustrated and have 2 drivers on my HDD. So I have my C drive on my SSD and I have a D and E on my HDD.

Haha it certainly is frustrating. Your situation is pretty much the same as mine, I have a c and d on my ssd. No matter what I try windows will not allow me to delete the d:/ and allocate it to c:/

I would try going back to win7pro but from what I can tell disk management is identical to win10pro, so I doubt that would solve my problem.

Yeah I gave up on it. My HDD is is 3 TB and my E drive is 330 GB so it'll never be an issue anyways but its frustrating to a point that they will not merge.

Sounds like you're going to need a 3rd party tool, but something is off. you should be able to extend that partition.

Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online - or something along these lines.

Have you tried diskpart from an elevated command prompt??
