December 28, 201510 yr Quite slow for anyone trying to be in any sort of decent shape to pass the test she is trying to pass. I was a very slow long distance runner but could run the 2 minute mile when in the Army in 14 minutes. Could I do it now with an artificial hip and a bad knee at 49? Right now no. Give me 6 months to try and get in some better shape and I could flirt with 8 minutes I think as long as my knee held out. Heck we WALK 1.3 miles at work in 15 minutes at break on our walking trail we have mapped out. Go look at the vast majority of race results from any given race. If you clock in at an 8 pace, you're finishing well in the upper tier.

Most folks walk at a 20 minute/mile pace.
December 28, 201510 yr If you are walking 1.3 miles in 15 minutes that is an incredibly fast pace. Most folks walk at a 20 minute/mile pace. Yeah, that's a pretty insane pace. If I do a "walk" on the treadmill, I'll do 4.0-4.5 mph pace. What he's saying is over a 5.2 mph pace. That's freakishly quick to walk.
December 28, 201510 yr Quite slow for anyone trying to be in any sort of decent shape to pass the test she is trying to pass. Like I said earlier, there is no way everybody in that fire department can run an 8 minute mile... That is a very quick pace.
December 28, 201510 yr If you are walking 1.3 miles in 15 minutes that is an incredibly fast pace. Most folks walk at a 20 minute/mile pace. Yep...it's not like that EVERY walk, but it is on some. It's got me huffing and puffing and telling the guys to slow down sometimes because I have a long, slow gait. Sometimes they seem like they are almost running. Point being is, 8 minutes isn't fast for 1 1/2 miles.

December 28, 201510 yr Go look at the vast majority of race results from any given race. If you clock in at an 8 pace, you're finishing well in the upper tier. Definitely. Especially for a female. In this "race" the males and females should be judged the same obviously. Granted, she is not going this distance, but my last marathon I finished at a 7:59 pace and that is considered really strong. Hour away from the Kenyans, but still strong.

Granted, she is not going this distance, but my last marathon I finished at a 7:59 pace and that is considered really strong. Hour away from the Kenyans, but still strong. Exactly. And you're an ironman so you aren't the average guy either. :lol2: :lol2:

You are a hero in my mind for even being able to finish a marathon, WAY before we talk about averaging 8-minute miles over that distance.
December 28, 201510 yr Go look at the vast majority of race results from any given race. If you clock in at an 8 pace, you're finishing well in the upper tier. That may be the case over 10 miles or more. Been a LONG time since I have done anything like that so I don't pay a lot of attention. But I stand by my original statement, it's a slow pace over 1 1/2 miles. At least it was when I was in the Army, and an 8 minute mile was a failing time for the 2 mile run. At 6'5, 230 + pounds (then) I just wasn't built to run long distances, and there weren't many guys that finished behind me. Now I could sprint up and down the basketball court all day, but that's a different animal all together.
December 28, 201510 yr Exactly. And you're an ironman so you aren't the average guy either. :lol2: :lol2: Not at all. 12 marathons under my belt and that is the best I've done. It doesn't make sense, but marathons are worse than Ironmans.
December 28, 201510 yr It doesn't make sense, but marathons are worse than Ironmans. Sure it does. Running sucks. :lol2:

I am also considering the fact she is female. How Do You Compare to the Average Road Racer? | Runner's World
December 28, 201510 yr Either I was a LOT better distance runner than I give myself credit for, or I was stationed with a bunch of jack rabbits. My 14 minute 2 mile run was SLOW in comparison to what most guys were doing.
