lawildcat Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I wonder how many chances a man gets to pass all the tests that are administered. If I'm a fire fighter in NY, I'm not liking my chances if this woman is supposed to have my back. Just sayin' Woman who failed NYC fire department running test six times given seventh chance | Fox News A woman who failed the Fire Department of New York's running test six times will get a seventh opportunity to become a full-fledged member of the department, according to a published report. The New York Post says that Wendy Tapia, 34, is among a group of EMTs promoted to probationary firefighters. The group will start an 18-week training academy Monday. The Post reported that Tapia was allowed to conditionally graduate from the Fire Academy on May 17, 2013, despite being unable to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes or less. At the time, she blamed her slow going on a foot injury. After she was sworn in, the FDNY gave her five more chances to pass the test, but Tapia was unsuccessful in all five attempts. After her sixth failed attempt, in November 2013, Tapia resigned and returned to EMS never having worked a full-fledged shift. FDNY members who spoke to the Post predict that Tapia will be allowed to pass the running test by FDNY brass, who fear a gender discrimination lawsuit. "She’ll graduate, no question," one FDNY member said. "The department doesn’t want another black eye." In March of 2014, the city agreed to pay $98 million to settle a federal lawsuit alleging discrimination against minority applicants. "All who enter the academy must meet the same requirements in order to graduate," insisted FDNY spokesman Jim Long Saturday.
UKMustangFan Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I'm not a fan. And there's no doubt in my mind that a man wouldn't be given anywhere close to 7 chances. Maybe 2.
Jumper_Dad Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Her physical ability directly impacts the safety of her co-workers...this is hopefully a decision that I hope no one regrets later.
TheDeuce Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I don't know how NYFD works, but you can take a fire exam here as many times as you want. Just because you fail it the first time, doesn't mean you will NEVER be in good enough shape to pass the test.
Wireman Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 I think it would be awesome if they tased her at the finish line.

As long as they don't bend the rules, no one should have a problem with it. I think that's what the one guy is alluding to that she'll pass no matter what, that would be a shame.
TheDeuce Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 After reading through the article again, it certainly seems like some hoops were trying to be jumped through in order to get her on. That is a no no when it comes to this line of work.
bugatti Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 8 minute/mile pace. If she can hold that for her age group she would qualify for Boston.
TheDeuce Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 8 minute/mile pace. If she can hold that for her age group she would qualify for Boston. There's no way every fire fighter in New York can run an 8-minute mile.
halfback20 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 8 minute/mile pace. If she can hold that for her age group she would qualify for Boston. Big difference in running 1.5 miles at that pace vs running a marathon at that pace right? Lol
BigVMan23 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 8 minute/mile pace. If she can hold that for her age group she would qualify for Boston. That's really quite slow. Anyway, not a fan of them letting her "slide" for fear of a lawsuits...that's crap. With that said, as long as everybody else can take the test as many times as they can to try to pass it, then I'm ok with her doing it several times. We have several certifications here at work (book testing, nothing physical) that you can take as many times as you want/need till you pass. As a matter of fact most people take one of them 3 times before passing, it's pretty tough. Lots of lawyers take the bar 3-4 times before they pass.
TheDeuce Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 That's really quite slow. Quite slow for who?

What do you call the person that finishes dead last in medical school? Doctor.
UKMustangFan Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Quite slow for who? :lol2: I'm with you. 8 minute miles is not slow by any stretch.
BigVMan23 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Quite slow for who? Quite slow for anyone trying to be in any sort of decent shape to pass the test she is trying to pass. I was a very slow long distance runner but could run the 2 minute mile when in the Army in 14 minutes. Could I do it now with an artificial hip and a bad knee at 49? Right now no. Give me 6 months to try and get in some better shape and I could flirt with 8 minutes I think as long as my knee held out. Heck we WALK 1.3 miles at work in 15 minutes at break on our walking trail we have mapped out.
