River Rat: Class split is not the answer by Peter W. Zubaty

I think it's a good idea. And with all due respect, I think those that are so against it, are being narrow minded and have only their own selfish interests at heart.

So, anyone who disagrees with you is narrow minded and selfish? That comment seems to DEFINE narrow mindedness.

No, disagreeing with me isn't what make them narrow minded and selfish.

Bemoaning the fact that their state titles won't mean as much does.

I can't find any negatives at all. I'm normally pretty good at seeing the other sides position, but in this case the position seems to be:

1) Too many teams will make the playoffs which will water it down

2) Too many teams will will state titles which will water it down

I don't see how either position is valid. A total of 6 state champions instead of 4, doesn't seem to water down anything. And even if it does, I would think that in this case the needs/wants of the many outweigh the needs/wants of the few. I feel that those who fail to realize that are in this case, narrow minded . And because they are taking into account ONLY how it could possibly affect their team or school, instead of seeing how this is a good thing for the great majority of schools, I do indeed think that they have selfish interests at heart.

They seem to be among the most vocal against.

And in that post of mine I said nothing about being against it!!!! I am saying I am not sure what the answer is to solve the issues that some schools have with the current format. I am also saying that NO MATTER what you do someone will always find something to complain about....I am FOR what is best for the kids. IT'S NOT ABOUT pleasing some superintendent, parent or coach, fan, etc......

32 teams in each division make the playoffs. In Indiana all schools get in, but only play 9 regular season games. KY should not change the format so 90% of schools get into the playoffs. If you're going to go that far, make it 100%.

The problem is that too many schools were complaining about not winning state titles, and were blaming the private schools for their predicament. The KHSAA change the rule this way instead of separating public and private. In my opinion, neither change is appropriate. State championships should be difficult to win. That is what makes them special.

And as far as what is good for the kids... How wise is it to tell a team that's 1-9 or 2-8 they are playoff caliber?

I don't think adding 2 state champions for a total of 6, is going to make winning a state title a cake walk. With 216 football playing schools and 4 championships 1.8% of the schools win state titles. With 216 football playing schools and 6 championships a whopping 2.7% will win state titles!!!! I think that still qualifies as difficult.

As for letting 1-9 and 2-8 schools in the playoffs, that's already happening.

Again, this arguement seems silly. I don't see how giving more teams/schools a chance to play more games is a bad thing. The cream will still rise to the top. THe best teams will still win the titles. The truth is that instead of 212 teams ending on a losing note, now only 210 team's seasons will end on a sour note.

I thought the problem was with the size of the schools, and playing against like sized competition?

Using Ohio, you have just demonstrated why KY has a problem. Look at the size of the schools in each class, and the disparity between top to bottom. Then look at the size disparity of our proposed 6A system. Then look at the size disparity of our current system. If you can't see it then, you just don't want to see it.

why stop with Football? Other states do it.

The problem with KHSAA's 6 division alignment is there just are not enough schools to warrant this. There will be fewer than 40 schools per division, and 32 of them make the playoffs. Some schools are going to the playoffs before they ever snap the ball. And what of the 22 teams that don't go to the playoffs? At least in Ohio the schools that make the playoffs deserve it by winning games. Playoff berths are hard to come by in Ohio, no matter how you fill the brackets. I just think if they want this many in the playoffs, then allow them all in. I'd feel better about that.

In some case with the new alignment they have eliminated some of the best competition from the playoffs by putting perennial rivals in different divisions. That's how to dilute the meaning of State Champion. And I don't think enough thought went into the non-divisional scheduling issues this new alignment presents certain schools.

Plus smaller districts mean schools can now schedule more non-district games creating several more big matchups.

I Really, really, really, really, REALLY like this aspect of the change. I agree with the other benefits, but this one hits home.

Same here!

All I can say is that states like TX, AL, GA, FL that traditionally produce top notch talent all have more than 4 classes. I sincerely doubt any of those people associated with the teams that won championships feel that theirs isn't as nice or worthy than any other class.

.

They have larger pools of talent, and alot more schools. Not fair to compare. We are a small state.

That's not why it was done. Plain and simple. I'm not a huge fan of the change, but know it was a way around disaster IMO...

This is not why it was done? I see no other reason?

This was about some schools who couldn't beat other schools and wanted a way around it.
