February 6, 201610 yr Season hasn't even started yet and the Reds are already losing... Lost the arbitration hearing against JJ Hoover. Reds offered $1.225M and Hoover was awarded $1.4M. First arbitration hearing in more than 10 years for the Reds. Teams always lose in Arbitration.......it is just a matter of how much they lose by. Hoover went from 535,000 to 1.4 mil. Even if the Reds "won" it would have been 1.2 mil. If Hoover is semi-terrible this year and goes to arbitration again he would get more next year.

If Hoover is semi-terrible this year and goes to arbitration again he would get more next year. I see your point. However, the right to "lose" at arbitration was hard-negotiated and is deeply valued. Clubs WIN & Players lose when Clubs fully control the player's salary for the first ~3 yrs. Clubs & players DRAW when the player is arb eligible for the next ~3 yrs. Players WIN & Clubs LOSE when player is FA after that. Kris Bryant will be an interesting case study. Rules say Cubs can pay him what they want for the next 2 or 3 seasons. Reality says they may want to try to do a multiyear deal to avoid the PR nightmare of him complaining about only getting paid $600k or whatever while putting up big stats. Theo can say "that's what the system calls for" as much as he wants and it won't matter. He survived not taking him North from AZ last year to avoid losing a year of control, but this won't be that easy. They'll also get "crushed" in his arbitration years if they allow it to get there.
February 10, 201610 yr Rose Griffey Morgan Foster Bench Perez Concepcion Geronimo Gullett At their age, I might still take my chances.
February 20, 201610 yr What we're missing is the fact that he's been hurt over the past few seasons and missed time due to surgery. He rushed back before he should have and the first half of last season proved he was a gamer. Are you his doctor? If not, how do you know this? You think Bruce came back without being 100%, that's your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I'm not buying it, that's just an excuse.
February 22, 201610 yr The fact that Hoover is getting $1.4 is a complete joke. Between him and Bailey, lots of wasted money.

That's actually a fine contract for a player of Hoover's level and experience. He had a horrendous 2014 season. His other 3 years in the majors he's been very solid. I'm actually surprised he's not getting paid more than that.

Granted, he won't have many save opportunities but his overall production. Then I may have a change of mind.

If he has even a little bit of success in the closer role this year, he'll dwarf that number next season either in Cincinnati or elsewhere.

Hoover has been pretty darn good other than 2014. Though, I am not sure I like him the closing role.
