Inbounds, out of bounds, fair ball, foul ball?

Featured Replies

Anybody ever notice how lines are used so differently in various sports? In football the sidelines are out of bounds. In basketball the sidelines and end lines are out of bounds, the centerline (is another situation entirely), while touching the lane lines during a free throw by anyone is a lane violation. All these seem consistent.

So why is the FOUL line in baseball so named when any ball touching any part of it is a FAIR ball? In golf any ball touching the OUT of BOUNDS line itself is considered INBOUNDS? Seems to me in baseball we should have fair lines, and in golf the inbounds lines.

Just saying! Seems like there are other sports probably with different boundary line inconsistencies with Oldercoach's common sense. Anybody got any?

Easy answer. Baseball and golf are right. The others, all wrong. They need to change. What's so hard to understand here?

In rugby the lines are out of play.

In soccer the lines are in play, also.

What do they call the lines in soccer? I'm guessing sidelines, or endlines.

Touchlines for both.

From year to year when I take periodic marginal interest while watching Tennis on TV, I always have to re-remind myself if the line is in, or is it out. :idunno:

Not only is the line "In" in Tennis.......the ball can be 10% on the line and 90% past the line and the ball is still considered "In".
