December 14, 201510 yr Rajon Rondo suspended one game for berating official - Sactown Royalty Mexico City just won't go away. The NBA announced today that Kings guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended for one-game for berating an official during the Kings-Celtics game in Mexico City on December 3rd. Rondo was ejected from that game midway through the third quarter. The official NBA press release claims that Rondo directed a "derogatory and offensive term" towards the official and also did not leave the court in a timely manner upon being ejected. That may very well be the case, but it's a bit surprising that it took the league this long to levy a punishment on Rondo. It's been over a week since this happened and the Kings have played four games since then. The NBA definitely knew what Rondo said and did soon after that game ended, and you would hope that in the future a punishment would come in a more timely fashion. Apparently the ref is gay and Rodno had a few things to say about that.
December 14, 201510 yr Author http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba-referee-bill-kennedy-reveals-he-is-gay--rajon-rondo-made-alleged-homosexual-slur-to-him-174255321.html Bill Kennedy, one of the NBA's top referees, has revealed he is gay. "I am proud to be an NBA referee and I am proud to be a gay man," Kennedy told Yahoo Sports on Sunday night. "I am following in the footsteps of others who have self-identified in the hopes that will send a message to young men and women in sports that you must allow no one to make you feel ashamed of who you are." Kennedy declined further comment on his announcement. NBA commissioner Adam Silver delivered a statement of support for Kennedy. "I wholeheartedly support Bill's decision to live his life proudly and openly," Silver told Yahoo Sports in a statement. "Throughout his 18-year career with the league, Bill has excelled as a referee because of his passion, dedication and courage. Those qualities will continue to serve him well both as a game official and as a positive influence for others. While our league has made great progress, our work continues to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity."
December 14, 201510 yr Wasn't Kobe suspended for the same thing? I like the consistency. I'm hoping Rondo didn't know he was gay.
December 14, 201510 yr Wasn't Kobe suspended for the same thing? I like the consistency. I'm hoping Rondo didn't know he was gay. Rondo is the third NBA player to be punished for the use of anti-gay slurs, but the first to be suspended. Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah was fined $50,000 during the 2011 playoffs for making a slur toward a heckling fan, and Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for using an anti-gay slur toward a referee earlier that same season. Both players apologized for the comments.
December 16, 201510 yr Heard today that Doc Rivers was suspended for using a similar slur against the same ref a while back. Haven't confirmed it as true, though.
December 17, 201510 yr Author Heard today that Doc Rivers was suspended for using a similar slur against the same ref a while back. Haven't confirmed it as true, though. This was back in his Boston days. I'm not sure if he was ever suspended for it.
December 20, 201510 yr This was back in his Boston days. I'm not sure if he was ever suspended for it. I cannot believe he was. I think that would have been big news. I am sooo glad Rondo I out of Boston. I like the Celtics and Rondo is a total tool...
December 20, 201510 yr Out of all the times basketball players use anti-gay slurs throughout a game, I can't believe that Rondo used one and directed it to a ref who is actually gay. Bet it makes you think twice before saying it again.
