WOW!!! Very impressive.

Holy Cow...Holy Cross is starting to look like "The Little Engine That Could".

 

Tonight's game was an exciting fierce fast paced, seriously intense pressure packed game from start to finish.

 

Both teams brought it with the "D" taking each other out of their games. Cooper greatly defended the perimeter keeping the Indians from having their way in 3 land and often both teams denied each other too much in the ways of open looks making for lots of rushed shots at both ends.

 

Both the Indians and Jags were impressive with whipping the ball around looking to make something happen. Cooper looks more fine tuned in that department.

 

At the end of one period it was knotted up at 9. Cooper started to pull away a little in the 2nd and almost went into half time with an 8 point lead if not for Bezold's last second 3 that bounced high off of the rim only to come back down landing in the hole to end the half with HC down by 5, and a sense of hope.

 

The star of the 2nd half in my book has to be the Indian's Derrick Barnes who became a man right before everybody's eyes. The other night against the Camels he was neither here nor there, and HC was living by the 3 anyhow, but tonight his services were much needed because the 3 option wasn't available, and he answered the call with dedication and relentless tough effort.

 

Cooper held the lead all throughout the 3rd and the 4th and a couple of times by 9.

 

The Indians didn't crack, and just kept hanging tight.

 

I don't want to omit any other names as this victory for them truly was a team effort. Hamilton Scott was strong on D and did a bit of tough hard fought scoring of his own. Forward Alex Hacker went down hard in the 3rd period and had to head to the locker room looking dizzy. Not sure what became of all of that. Hope he's alright.

 

Barnes really did his damage big time in the 4th period which really made all the difference. Bezold of course either smartly maneuvered to draw fouls to get to the line or find Barnes streaking to the basket. Jakobowksi got an early 3 in the game and a clutch one in the 4th that added insult to injury helping to seal the deal.

 

Cooper's a darn good team, and really had this whole game won up until the last 1:30, but the Indians just wouldn't be denied. Their fortitude to never say die is impressive and their confidence with this win, and the one the other night against CC has undoubtedly made solid believers of themselves.

 

There's bound to be a few posts here screaming "home cooking" but I'm not buying it.

 

To be fair there were two highly questionable situations that allowed HC to cash in or either keep momentum.

 

First one came in the 1st half where there was a no call when ball went out of bounds near Cooper's basket, and the Indians ran it the length of the floor and scored.

 

Late in the game the ball got loose from HC and Bezold dove for it. From where I was standing I couldn't see exactly who it had touched before going out but was sure that it should be Cooper's ball and surprised by the call in HC's favor.

 

An argument could be made that those two calls could've effected the final decision in the long run, and they very well could have. Some will undoubtedly scream about other calls, but that's just par for the course. I saw a clean as a whistle block tonight that had people screaming foul. You know how it goes.

 

No matter what, both teams played their butts off and deserved victory, but only one could claim the "W".

 

This was my first time seeing McNeil and though I could see where he's a good player, tonight the Indians stifled him for the most part. If he typically has his way, he didn't tonight. Taking nothing away from their talents, I wasn't seeing much in the ways of standouts with Cooper, but just a darn good TEAM that will be no doubt be making some noise for the entirety of this season.

 

Tonight though was HC's night to roar.

They face the Eagles of Scott in Taylor Mill on Tues, Dec 15th.

 

Scott is 3-1 with wins against Pendleton Co (92-90), Clark Co (100-98), and Harrison Co (81-70), with their only loss coming at the hands of Mason County (93-87).

 

Scott is averaging 90 points a game, while giving up 86.25

 

Seems they score a lot, but then again so do their opponents.

I know that Holy Cross plays "D" so it'll be interesting to see the outcome of this one.

To go along with this loss for Cooper they now get to hop a bus for Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky, an hour and a half away, to face from Region 12, 4-1 West Jessamine at 6:00 tomorrow night in the "Asbury University High School Basketball Shootout".

I bet you could scour Tim Sullivan's notes preparing for this one and you wouldn't find anything about the need to stop Barnes .... Those 14 second half points were huge, and I believe a lot of Barnes points resulted from nifty passes from Bezold. Kid (Bezold) deserves a lot of credit for recognizing what was available against a quality opponent and taking advantage.

 

When was the last time Holy Cross beat the top team in the ninth region?

You are right on. I personally didn't expect to see what Barnes had accomplished, but when he got in his groove and made his presence known, he was unstoppable. With a night where the 3 was mostly denied for HC it was good to see that they were able to adjust and find other options.

 

Going in I sorta had them figured as a team that lived and died by the 3, but they proved to themselves and everybody else that their game is more complete than that.
