Steve is a Good of a man as you'll meet. Have your sense of humor ready if you're around him. I think he really enjoyed pointing out my thinning hair when he saw me a couple weeks ago after all the years we would poke fun at his lack of hair growing up.

Steve Bertram has called games for multiple generations at Boyle. Called my games in the 80's and calls my sons games now. Pretty cool stuff.

 

If memory serves Steve started doing Boyle games in 1974. He did a stint as the Admiral caller from 1984 to the late or mid 90's. Then back to the Rebels.

I think I remember Steve getting the job as the voice of the Lexington Legends their first season. He did call all of my games from 79-81 at Boyle.

One of the first ballgames that Steve called was a basketball game with my dad in about 1969 or '70 when Steve was in school at Stanford High. A fight broke out during the game and Steve went from play-by-play to blow-by-blow. Afterwards, my dad told him that it would be better not to describe who was hitting who.

 

I've known him, his brother and his parents my whole life. Great people.

Bertram is a great announcer. Ransdell is good also but Gary Ball is horrible. All he wants to do is name drop and tries to ad shock value. He actually in my opinion is the worst I have ever heard. I must have heard him drop Joe Halls name 1000 times during football broadcast. He talks to much about UK and any player committed there he wont shut up about.

If my memory is correct Steve was in the booth as the Danville radio play by play man for 5 state titles, and he's been in the booth for 7 for Boyle. I think "His" record in state title games is 12-1.

 

He also called every one of Danville's 42 straight wins during their streak, and was there for Boyle during their 48 game streak & 25 game streak. He's an absolute pro and the Danville/Boyle community has been fortunate to have had someone of his caliber to listen to on Friday nights for he better part of 40 years. While he's obviously partisan at times, as he should be, he doesn't go over the line to the level of "homer", and he keeps it real during his broadcasts. Glad the rest of the state could hear what we get to hear on a weekly basis.

Steve is as good as they come. Best thing I like is that he will call out his own. I've heard him question Boyle players and their decisions as well as the coaches. Doesn't go looking for it but doesn't shy away from it. Have called him a friend for many years. Only bad thing about Steve is he spoils you. Hard listening to some other radio crews because of him.

I've known Steve for several years. For all his skill in the booth, he is an even better person outside it. A genuinely good guy.
