Final 2A Notebook: Superlatives for a Super Season

Cards Winter Migration

*In the Tone of One of Those British Nature Documentary Narrators*

" Every year the elusive Western Kentucky Mayfield Cardinal gathers together the first week of December. You can tell this bird by it's distinctive bright red crown and black torso or white torso. After a long November, the Cardinal welcomes winter by the most peculiar of migrations. Instead of flying South for the Winter, this pesky bird flies East. A large congregation of bird will always join together, chirping proudly, and together in unison fly just over two hours.

It never fails, as if they have a biological clock. On the Friday following Thanksgiving they will ruffle feathers and prepare their trip.. young to old... and one week later inhabit a field made of artificial grass in Bowling Green, KY."

After a year's worth of hypothetical matchups and scoreboard watching Mayfield defeated reigning 2A Champs DeSales 24-19. The Cardinals overcame an early 13-0 deficit to reel off 24 straight points before a late Colts TD cut the lead. In the end though it was too much Mayfield Defense.

They Were Bred For This Kind of Game

Meanwhile along the Ohio River Newport Central Catholic pulled off a comeback of their own.

In a defensive struggle that seemed auspiciously as if it were control of Danville for 3 Quarters, Newport Catholic found some late magic to rally for a 15-8 win. After nearly 45:00 of being shutout the Breds scored 14 points in the waning minutes of the game and withstood a last second effort by Danville that stretched inside the 5 yard line.

Class 2A Superlatives

Let's have some fun now and award some hypothetical trophies!

Lou Groza Award (Kicker)

Sidney Herndon, Mayfield

Jim Thorpe Award (Defensive Back)

Cal Lewellyn, Christian Academy Louisville

Dick Butkus Award (Linebacker)

John Boarman, Owensboro Catholic

Doak Walker Award (Running Back)

Jacob Smith, Newport Central Catholic

Fred Biletnikoff Award (Wide Receiver)

Lane Kennemore, Mayfield

Davey O'Brien Award (Quarterback)

Landon Arnett, Mayfield

Paul Hornung Award (Most Versatile Player)

Rex Henderson, Butler County

Coach of the Year

Clay Clevenger, Danville

Chuck Bednarik Award (Defensive POY)

Maleek Lawrence, Newport Central Catholic

Heisman (Player of the Year)

Ray Zuberer, Owensboro Catholic

I was shocked to see the linebacker award go to the kid @ OC... Arnett for cards lead the defense with tackles on what has to be a top defense team..

Great job on the final notebook! My favorite team has three honorees!!

I have never seen Kennemore from Mayfield play, but Charles Gaines from Lloyd had to be in the conversation for the WR award. Based on the KHSAA stats, Gaines outgained Kennemore on an average of 20 more yards/game. A lot of the categories between the two were really close.

Boarman for Ocath

121 Solo Tackles

94 Assisted Tackles

3 Fumble Recoveries

1 Interception

That's big time stats

If there were a Final 4 Gaines from Lloyd Memorial, Morton from Ocath, and VanCleave of Danville would have filled it out

but I thought Desales was the #1 defensive team in 2A... :sssh:

As sure as the Cardinals will migrate to BG or East Mayfield as I refer to it, AtlantaCat has a great right up. BG is to Mayfield what Catlanta was to UK

What a fantastic job they did against Mayfield rushing attack...

Alot of great players in 2A. Could have went to multiple kids. Good write up.

Absolutely every one of those I had about 3-4 worthy candidates jotted down to choose from.

The only slam dunk was Coach of the Year..but even then Morris and Edge had pretty impressive resumes of their own

Morpheus we got beat okay? Yes, we thought our defense was good, but enough is enough. Let it go, show some class!

Dkincer we did the best we could do and played hard, Don't belittle the kids and how hard they worked. I know it is easy to type up sarcastic comments, but like someone informed me, the kids read this stuff. I know I made the same mistake.
