Pre-season rankings of state finalists

Featured Replies

The Lexington Herald pre-season Coaches' pole rankings compared to final participants is pretty impressive. But, who would know better than the coaches themselves!

Class A: Finalists Pre-season rank Record

Beechwood. #1. 13-1

Pikeville. #4. 12-2

Class 2A: Mayfield. #1. 13-1

Newcath. #3. 9-5

Class 3A: Belfry. #1. 13-1

Lexcath. #4. 11-3

Will continue thread after researching couple of team records. Showing age again.

BGP had Belfry #1 and Lexington Catholic #2 in the preseason.

Pre-season rankings cont'd.

Class 4A: Johnson Central. #2. 12-1

South Warren. #3. 14-0

Class 5A: Bowling Green. #2. 13-1

Pulaski Co. #3. 13-1

Class 6A: Male. #2. 14-0

Lafayette. #6. 12-2

Only three pre-season #1 teams did not make it to Bowling Green.

6A Trinity which lost to finalists Male in 3rd round.

5A Highlands which lost to finalists Pulaski Co. in 4th round.

4A John Hardin which lost in 3rd round to non-finalists Shelby Co.

Pretty impressive pre-season forecasting by our state coaches. Wonder how our BGP polls stacked up?

BluegrassPreps:

Class 1A:

Beechwood. #1

Pikeville. #5 (Ranked #3 in their half behind Raceland and Paintsville)

Class 2A:

Mayfield. #1

Newport Central Catholic. #3 (Ranked #1 in their half)

Class 3A:

Belfry. #1

Lexington Catholic #2 (Ranked #1 in their half)

Class 4A:

Johnson Central. #1

South Warren. #3 (Ranked #2 in their half behind John Hardin)

Class 5A:

Bowling Green. #2 (Ranked #1 in their half)

Pulaski County. #3 (Ranked #2 in their half behind Highlands)

Class 6A: Finalists Pre-season rank

Male. #1

Lafayette. #5 (Ranked #2 in their half behind Scott County)

BluegrassPreps had 5 of 6 preseason #1s make the finals, with only Highlands missing, who made the state semifinals. Additionally, Lexington Catholic, Newport Central Catholic, and Bowling Green were the highest ranked teams on their respective sides, meaning BGP correctly ranked 8 of the 12 finalist teams relative to the teams on their side. BGP did not rate any finalist lower than 5th, and only Pikeville was outside the top 2 on their respective side.

Pretty impressive BGP!

With 6 classes, it isn't hard to pick who will make the state finals. Most hacks could pick 8 of the 12 2016 finalists right now.

Dazzle us. Go on record and pick them. Name the 12 finalists for 2016.

2016 Finalist

1A Beechwood / Hazard

2A Mayfield / Newport Catholic

3A Belfry / Central

4A John Hardin / Wayne County

5A Bowling Green / Highlands

6A Trinity / Scott County

If I get 8/12 will you send me a Belfry T-shirt?

Absolutely and I'll buy your ticket to the game of your choice. :thumb:

I may bring you one next week just for being a good sport

With the exceptional accuracy of both BGP and Coaches' poll, it amusingly occurred to me that should the BGP poll prove more accurate than the Coaches perhaps there might accidentally be credibility to BGP comments. So allow me the freedom and liberties of introducing my own comparison statistics.

Class A: BGP (1&5)= 6. Coaches (1+4)=5. Coaches win

Class 2A: BGP (1+3)=4. Coaches (1+3)=4. Tie

Class 3A: BGP (1+2)=3. Coaches (1+4)=5. BGP

Class 4A: BGP (1+3)=4. Coaches (2+3)=5. BGP

Class 5A: BGP (2+3)=5. Coaches (2+3)=5. Tie

Class 6A: BGP (1+5)=6. Coaches (2+6)=8. BGP

I believe the evidence speaks for itself, by a resounding score of 3 for BGP, 1 for Coaches, and 2 ties, the BGP Polls proves unquestionably that sometimes, somewhere, on some subjects the postings of sober BGP second questing, Monday morning quarterbacks in the stands have some degree of occasional credibility.

The BGP staff really takes the rankings very serious and put a lot of time formulating their polls and then defending it.

What separates the BGP poll more than anything is the fact people realize a loss doesn't always translate to a team deserving to drop and a win doesn't always mean a team should move up or even in some cases keep their ranking.

The AP becomes a jumbled mess because people over value records and penalize too harshly for quality losses

Pretty impressive job BGP! Sorry some might want to tarnish this performance. Might comments were with an awestruck smile.

So are you saying that rankings are somewhat determined by whether a team is in the east or the west, and not purely on the skill level, ability, and talent of a team?

I didn't see that in anyone's comments.

In the case of the BGP rankings, they only try to rank the teams based on strength of the teams. It is an opinion poll, based on input from several folks all over the state, as ATL alluded to above. No consideration is given to west/east or who they think will end up in the finals. If several of the top teams are on the same side of the bracket it is a given that only one of them will reach Bowling Green, that is just how it works out. But that is not part of the process.

If the BGP pollsters tried to pick the two finalists (instead of ranking strength of teams 1-10) they would have been even more accurate IMO. NewCath is an example, they were ranked #3 overall, but if you go back and separate the east/west, they would have been ranked #1 on their half and BGP would have nailed the two finalists for that class. That is what DF was trying to show in his post above.
