I've heard a ton of praises for Tavin Lovan.

How is Colton Elkins not on this list? He is a game changer on defense and at 6'8" is an elite athlete. He has also improved offensively. I really don't understand that omission.

Coaches haven't seen it yet. They will this season and I think at season's end Colton will get plenty of recognition. He looked awesome yesterday.

No way there are 13 players in the State better than Tavin Lovan and Peyton Broughton.... The problem with High School coaches ranking kids is that they don't see most of these kids play unless they are on their schedule. How about an AAU coaches poll from all the Major AAU teams in the State? That will be more accurate.

Everybody wants to complain about "their guy" not being high enough, but they never want to say who they should be ahead of. I mean, if you're ranked the 14th-best player in the state, is there really a need to cry about not being No. 8 or No. 9.

 

I bet every kid in that top 10 has someone who believes they absolutely deserve to be in the top 10.

Frakes is right on target with his comments. I can think of a couple of notable omissions, one of which I already mentioned, and may disagree with some of the placements. However, overall this is a pretty good list.

 

Probably the most relevant fact here is that this ranking is based on a huge sample (coaches throughout the state). Generally, they have no bias outside of their own players. Most other rankings we see are one individual's opinion and, even if those weren't biased, are still just one person's opinion. Oh, and then there's the fact that these high school coaches do basketball full time. They tend to know the game, and the lay of the land, pretty well.

If you think high school coaches in Eastern KY know players in Western KY that they don't have on their schedule, you're kidding yourselves!! Most of you all had NO CLUE who Terry Taylor or Kyran Jones were until BG made a run at State.... Had they not made that run, they still are just as good of players IMO.

 

The relevancy to what I said is that High Level AAU Coaches scout and recruit from the ENTIRE STATE! They watch these players in high school games as well as compete against/ with them during AAU season. I am will to bet that you can ask any coach from the Louisville Magic, Travelers, Hoop Dreams, etc about the kids on this list, and they could give you their detailed impression of each. I doubt you could go to the head coach of McCracken, Madison Central, Glasgow, or any number of High Schools and get an in depth report on each kid.

Knowing the game and seeing certain players play are two totally different things... Most College Coaches know the game better than most High School Coaches, but does that make every College coach better at ranking Kentucky High School players?? HECK NO, because they don't ever see the majority of them play!

 

Long story short, how do you rank what you don't see?? Hence the reason for omission of players like Colton Elkins, and the drastic over ranking of some players vs others on the list...

Lead your team to the Sweet 16 and you'll get all of the exposure you need from the state's coaches. I promise.
