Grant Co and S. Oldman in 06

Featured Replies

We read a lot on this site about Highlands and CovCath. I would like to know more about what the other members of the district, Grant Co and S. Oldham will be like in 06, who will be returning starters and what new comers will make a significant impact on their teams.

I am wondering how much longer South Oldham will actually be in 3A, at the rate that Oldham County is growing I doubt much longer.

When will Pendleton Co be joining the district?

The new coach at Pendleton told the team and parents they would be in the district next year.

When KY football moves to 6 classes next year, Pendleton will be in with Mason, Carter, Bourbon, etc.

I can't speak for Grant Co. but I feel that South Oldham will be pretty strong next year. South lost many good players last year but the current players had a good weight room training, spring practice and 7 on 7. South will be smaller but quicker next year. South is now got some of the best facilities for public schools (sportsturf, large weight room (with turf being installed), large locker room (can be used for agilities (it also has turf carpet). I will leave naming key players to someone else but I will say that South has some really good one's caming back this year that played a major part of the big victory over Oldham Co. and close game vs. Highlands, etc.

Don't kid yourself about OCHS last year, they were not that good.

Oldham County School District has acquired the property to build a fourth high school closer to the Shelby County line. I understand the folks there want 4 teams in the same 2A district or at least all 4 in AAA.

I did my student teaching at OCHS, I knew the plans for East Oldham were on the books, just unsure as to an ETA on construction.

That is interesting about the district thing. Very interesting.

But they are still South's biggest rival and South's overall record vs. Oldham was very weak so it was a big improvement. South had only beaten that same senior bunch on the JV level (two years ago) by one point or something like that so the kids at South worked their butts off to get better so they could beat their rival by 50 points.

The coach's kid returns at quarterback.

After the 2004 season, Oldham graduated about 20 of it's starters. During that year, they didn't even have a freshmen team because numbers were so down. Only about 4-5 kids that played against South in 2005 had seen previous varsity action before that year. Don't kid yourself, Oldham was extremely down last year compared to previous years, and will probably continue to be that way for at least 1-2 more years. They just had about 2 straight years where they struggled to get many incoming freshman to participate, and it is really starting to hurt them now.

However they did have a good freshman team this past season so there is considerable potential there. :thumb:

Grant Co. Hosted a 7 on 7 a few weeks ago with a couple of teams from around the state. I had to go to Dayton that week so I thought I would stop by and check it out.

Saw some good things from Grant Co. QB was pretty good, receivers are not that quick and dropped a lot of sure passes. Defensively they didnt seem to be very aggressive but then again its hard to be aggressive when you dont have pads and cant have any real contact. Nevertheless, they did have one WR who had some good hands and made some spectacular catches, but he seemed to be the only one who seemed pretty confident out there. I personally dont believe passing leagues/tourneys are good indicators of what will come but I think Grant Co has a lot of work to do in the passing game. At times, the QB got frustrated and the coach was pretty frustrated as well. Seemed to me like the receiver corps was young and inexperienced.

Secondary appeared to be confused at times with their coverage responsibilities.

Grant Co. ran a no-huddle spread offense with 4-5 receiver sets and it didnt seem like the kids were entirely comfortable...with many of the players asking questions about routes. I overheard one coach telling someone that this was kind of an experimental offense to see whether or not its something they will want to use in the regular season. We'll have to see.

From what I saw, Grant Co. may have difficulty with teams that have any speed. Bryan Station & Iroquois had a lot of success against them with their speed, Bell Co. did pretty good with disciplined routes but didnt get much of anything deep against them.

Overall, if I had to predict (which again, I dont put much water in the bucket since it is only a passing league) I would say Grant Co. could be a 6-4 team. I dont know who they really play but I would venture a guess that any team they play that has at least 4 or 5 talented players will give them problems.

On a positive note for Grant Co. they did seem to be pretty well conditioned, good size and build overall. I had a chance to see some of the linemen and they looked pretty good in regards to size. If Grant Co. has success running the ball, then they wont have to rely too heavily on the passing game.
