It will still come down to turnovers! No turnovers OC should win, turnovers they won't. It is no different than it was last year. These last 2 years OC is practically the same maybe a little better on defense this year but offensively they are the same. A little down in the scoring department. RZ3 threw way more Td's last year and the running game stat wise isn't much different, last year they had 2 RB's this year they have one. TD's and yardage totals are about the same. I remember last year the players I talked with said the coaching staff was tight all week and it trickled down to the players and showed during the game.

 

I doubt the coaching staff was tight. Edge is about as loosy goosy as you get. I don't know many people that gamble as much as he does on the field. I agree he does it too much and it burns OC some times, but as far as tight. I doubt it. IF they were and only IF they were. It was because they knew the kids were scared of Murray. That's what I see from the endzone every year except the year when Catholic went to state in 2010. Those kids "hit hard" and didn't care how they looked coming on the field.

I would say last year's kids senior class was as soft as two pillows. Even maybe the year before class too. This senior class led by Boarman seems to be tough and not care how they look.

Murray's path to victory is to control the LOS. OC has a very scrappy defense - I think Murray will score some. Murray should try the bend but don't break - keep Morton in front of you and really all the skill players. That is easier said than done because if Morton get's the ball in space, it might not matter that you have safeties behind him. If Murray doubles up on Morton, that just opens up their other solid WR's and RB. Catholic needs to take what Murray gives, and the coaching staff is usually really good at that. If they drop 7 or 8 into coverage, RZ might need to take off a bunch - or delay draw or shovel to the RB. I can see RZ getting a ton rushing. Catholic doesn't need to get frustrated if they can't score 60 points, just manage the game, take what they give, don't force it. Take 5 yds a play - YOUR defense will be tough to score on. RZ simply needs to manage this game and don't worry if you don't have 300 yds passing and 5 TD's. Get the lead and make Murray play catch up - I think this OC team is the best in a while. I wish this was a Saturday game so all the Owesnboro area fans could watch both.

Edge and loose in the same sentence! That's funny! He always looks like he is about to blow a gasket every play! Heck of a coach can break down video better than anyone. Aces need to stretch the field a little early on to open up the middle for the run and short passing game. Get the ball to Morton across the middle and let him do what he does best.

I don't know about Coach Edge... but I know there are some Edge's that get pretty loose in the endzone during games. This game will come down to turnovers and Red zone conversions. Although Catholic's D has been much improved, Murray is still bigger and has a nice group of athletes on O. If OC's offense shows up.. they win. The last few years, Catholic's D has played well enough to win this ballgame but the offense has not scored in the Redzone and had turnovers that led or directly related to Murray's points. I like OC, more speed than in the past and the defense is playing well.

I do think having Shamari Morton will make a huge difference in this years game. Last season, without Morton, OCath lacked the big play threat against Murray. Having to drive down the field against an athletic defense is no easy task. Keep in mind, having Morton gives you the all around homerun threat via a pass, run, punt return, or kickoff return for a touchdown. Heck, I've even seen Morton intercept a pass and run it back for 6 this season.

 

IMO, the game will be won or lost based on OCath's ability to slow down Murray's running game. In OCath's losses, the Aces have had trouble stopping the run, which has been their demise in the past against Murray (along with untimely turnovers). The catch 22 is, Murray QB Des Miles can throw when needed, so stacking the box is a calculated risk.

 

Of offense OCath will probably have to use a running back to chip block Murray DE Tre Hornbuckle who has committed to Duke. Kid is a beast, and OCath must find him every possession. You don't want a kid like him coming scott free to the quarterback.

 

I've seen this OCath team a few times this year. I saw this team absolutely crap the bed against Daviess County and lose. I also saw this OCath team push one of the best teams in the state (Owensboro) to the brink. They say the truth always lies somewhere in the middle. I say, if OCath doesn't turn the ball over more than once, slows Murray's run game down (nobody is stopping it), and gets a big play from Morton, then the Aces will be making the road trip to Mayfield next week.

I taped the game last year on DVR from Cable 8. I was not aware how open the Staples kid was in the endzone when he dropped the pass. If he catches that OC wins.

That still stings a little. I know you have talked about it a lot but the number of uncharacteristic mistakes that the Aces make against Murray is staggering. People love to blame the coaches but they continue to put these kids in a great spot to beat Murray and something bad always happens.

It does seem that way! Crazy thing is he caught just about everything thrown to him during the season, his junior year he caught a long pass against Butler and broke his leg on the play and still hung onto it. As Dandy Don Meredith used to say if if's and buts were candy and nuts then everyday would be Christmas!

I remember that he broke his leg. He was injured before that game. He injured his arm and couldn't play. It was a heck of a catch.
