My point is that making the blanket statement that its a balk if a catcher catches the ball out of the box before he receives the pitch is not a balk as far as I can see in the rulebook.

Well four umpires are not going to see it because there were runners in motion, they all are not going to watching exactly what the catcher is doing.

 

I was sitting right behind home plate, and there was no doubt the catcher was coming out of his stance before the pitch was made..now rather that is legal or not I am not sure. Someone I was watching the game with said he thought that since the batter did not swing its not interference..Like I said I don't know the exact rule, but if Chas would have swung, the catcher would have had a broken arm...thats for sure.

That was the call and the explination I got the one time that I saw it.

My point is that the violation could not have been very obvious if none of the 4 umps called it.

This is what I'm questioning:

 

Didn't see the play, but the catcher has to be set in the catchers box until the pitch is delivered. He can step out and recieve the ball for a pitch out once the ball has been released. If he steps out before the ball is pitched, its a balk and runners get one base.

If that is the rule, then there is no doubt it was missed. There is no question to wether he was out of the box or not, because that was very obvious...the question is, is that a rule.

I've done some checking . In OBR (MLB for example), its not a rule. I don't know about FED(high school). I'd guess they have the same as OBR.

Just on side note you can have balks on any player in the game. While in training to be an umpire we were informed that you can also have bals on a first basemen or thirdbasemen etc. The general ruling is that you have to 8 men between the foul lines at one time. A firstbasemen holding a runner on first with one foot in foul territory. If he remains in this position when the ball leaves the pitchers hand he can be called for a balk. The ruling states that all players must be in the field of play except for the catcher. Going from this rule it would make sense that the catcher would have to remain in his respected catchers box position just like a batter must remain in the batters box.

VMA - if you were told that a fielder who is not in fair play at the time of pitch results in a balk, that is incorrect. If blue sees this, he stops play and says "get in fair territory." It is not a balk.

 

Same with the catcher - no penalty for lining up outside the box.
