Indiana 90 Kentucky 74

Biggest smile in Kentucky right now: Darrin Horn. What a steal he got with Slaughter. Overall the talent level in Ky senior class is down but that kid can play on the same level as those kids from Indiana and last night it was obvious that he was the only one. What a sham that he didn't win Mr. Basketball.

I've heard this every year for the past 3 years or so. Couldn't it be that the overall talent level in Kentucky is on par, and 3 years ago (Ross Neltner and co.), that year was just a great year. Every year the talent seems to be down.

Kentucky used to place players in the Super Five on a regular basis just 20 years ago. Whether that means we are and have been down overall since, or whether the bar (par) of expectation needs to be lowered, I don't know. I don't know whether we will ever recapture the time when we used to produce some of the best HS players in the country.

No way.The Neltner-Doellman-Brock class was down, too ... especially outside of northern Kentucky. We just seem to be in a down cycle of talent.

Hopefully in the future those picking the Ky team will do a better job then this year. Sort of seemed certain players had this team made just by showing up for tryouts and others didn't stand a chance regardless of how well they played. And yes I was in Georgetown to view the tryouts all day on Saturday.

What is the "Super Five"?

What is the "Super Five"?

The Courier-Journal publishes a yearly ranking of the top HS players in the country, compiling votes from experts, observers, writers and coaches all across the country. If I'm not mistaken, Dwayne Morton was the last Kentuckian to make it, in 1990.

Who besides Morton has ever made it? Manual Forrest? King Rex?

I recall these being first-teamers (the C-J link only has the first teams from the past 20 years):

Tony Kimbro

Darrell Griffith

Winston Bennett

Before that, there were a few as well I'm sure. And there used to be lots of Ky kids make it on the 2nd team and below, but I'm not sure how readily available that info is other than going through past issues of the C-J. Nowadays, Kentucky kids don't even make it on the 5th team.

To be perfectly honest, that AS team wasn't all that great, I went to the game in Indy that season and it wasn't a pretty sight.
