CCH takes a big step and hands Trinity their first loss to a KY team. CCH bigger and faster through the lineup and their defense just locked Trinity up all night. Colonels had attack after attack and Trinity's keeper kept them close. Could have been a 3 or 4 goal margin.

I think that Male beat Trinity last month, this was their only loss before tonight.

Colonels definitely the better team tonight, huge possession advantage and seemed to have Trinity on their heels for the majority of the match.

 

Total shots, and shots on goal were very telling tonight. As mentioned by groinpull, could easily have been a lopsided score.... 3 or 4 goal margin.

 

Only goal for Trinity came in the closing minutes, defensive mistake by CCH.

I wonder if this will move CovCath ahead of Trinity in the Maher Ratings?

While I didn't offer an opinion in the Trinity/CCH prediction thread I was quietly confident in the Colonels chances tonight based on a few things:

 

- The second half of the Montgomery County game I saw a spark that had been missing for CCH for quite a long time the last half of the season. They seemed to be getting the mojo back that they'd had early in the year.

 

- In the first matchup, while some may disagree, I felt CCH was the better team but were hampered by the hot weather and only playing 12 players that day. It seemed obvious to me that CCH had a speed/athleticism advantage and the scores were there that day but were not converted. The Colonels speed on the edges gave Trinity trouble all night. Both CCH goals started on the edges and there were a couple more that were not converted.

 

- Little mentioned was that CCH played the first game without one of their two 1st team all-region midfielders in Michael Wessels. Adding him into the mix would have to make a difference and he had a big game for CCH tonight.

 

Great team effort tonight.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — When the Trinity Shamrocks and Covington Catholic Colonels met on the boys’ soccer pitch in August, their 1-1 draw left a lot to be resolved.

 

So a pair of seniors from Northern Kentucky took matters into their own hands Saturday night when they saw the Shamrocks for the second and final time this year.

 

Covington Catholic’s upperclassmen duo of Jacob Litzler (first half) and Adam Flynn (second half) found the net as the Ninth Region champion Colonels “upset” the Seventh Region champion Shamrocks, 2-1 on John G. Heber Field in the quarterfinals of the 41st KHSAA State Tournament at Henry Clay High School’s Dr. Robert J. Bell Stadium.

 

Trinity (21-2-2) entered ranked No. 1 in the state by the MaxPreps.com computer rankings and second by the Maher computer ratings. Covington Catholic (22-2-2) was fourth by MaxPreps and fifth by Maher.

 

Not only was it the only game of the state tournament to pit two top-five teams against one another, but it featured squads which both entered unbeaten against in-state foes in regulation. Entering Saturday, Trinity was 16-0-5 in regulation entering against Kentucky teams, while the Colonels were 15-0-4.

Great win for CCH, they dominated 65-70 minutes of the 80. Trinity, IMO did not play "conservative", as some appear to want to blame their loss on… two years in a row. Trinity did not have a good game, but many times when a team plays bad it is more due to the opponent's (CCH) play more then their own. I think this was clearly the case tonight, CCH was well prepared, had a great tactical game plan and executed it to perfection. This was a total team win, every CCH player did his job and played well. Hesitate to name just a few because again, they are played well, but thought Wessels, The Back Four D,F,M,T, Litzler, Day, and Schutt in that order had excellent games.

Not sure why Vogt did not play, but hope he is ready and able to go Wednesday, hate for a kid to miss out playing in these type of games.

 

Went back and looked at the prediction thread for this game, apparently there are not as many NKY folks on the "band wagon" as they think. There were 8 predictions on that thread, 5 took the easy route, went with the favorite Trinity, shame on you NKY folks. 3 sitting in the good seats on the wagon picked CCH and yours truly and

2 much info got it exactly correct, predicted CCH 2, Trinity 1.

Remaining seats on the wagon are going quick now, hurry and grab one before they are all gone.

Vogt missed the game with an ankle sprain but should be back for Wednesday. I thought it was a good move by the staff to go to a 4-5-1 with about 27 minutes left in the game. CCH was already controlling the midfield and the extra midfielder helped them eat up all the loose balls. They scored about 2-3 minutes after making that change on a nice run down the right side, I think by Jacobs and a good ball into the box. At some point CCH went back to 4-4-2 but I didn't understand why they did that.

 

I agree, a good team with everyone playing hard and now they need to focus on Fern Creek.

Thanks for posting it. I emailed that in less than 7 minutes after it went final (when I had final shot totals and Trinity's All-Tourney pick).

 

Hoped it would be in the state edition (8 p.m. deadline), but don't think they budgeted for it (no way at that time to guarantee it would be over).

 

CC looked really good.

 

A Trinity player (if you read updated "optional" gamer recap with quotes from both coaches as well" said CC spent the entire first half in Trinity's side. Can't say I disagree.
