Beechwood could be the 2006 LCA as they pull it out with 2 in the 6th and 4 in the 7th. An unbelievable finish as Beechwood loads the bases with 1 out. Chris Curley struck out and Newman hits a grounder. The shortstop looks to second and after the hesitation/indecision doesn't have a play. Moore follows with a single that the left fielder bobbles to allow the tieing run to score. The throw goes to third and gets away allowing the winning run to score. Unbelievable finish!

Actually, the tying run was going to score even if Gilliland had fielded the ball cleanly. The bobble allowed the runner to move from second to third and then home after the throw got away from the third baseman.

 

Neither the pitcher nor catcher were in position to corral the ball after it got away from the third baseman. The ball rolled toward the on-deck circle and both players were on the baseline.

Bottom line, bad gamble. He's useless for the rest of the tournament. Why not finish with him. He was absolutely cruising.

I stand corrected. So, an efficient inning would consist of about 12 pitches per inning. We're going to allow a kid to throw at least 60 pitches and come back after one days rest? Not a good idea. I guess I thought the other way because I'd never do that to a kid.

 

BTW, why do two teams get to play Wednesday and two play Thursday? To me, that's a lot worse than playing twice on Saturday in the Sweet Sixteen. At least you can use all yout players.

Joiner had thrown 57 pitches through five innings. I doubt that he could have gone the route on Saturday, but he might have been good for four or five innings. Maybe.

I seem to recall Mike Fields having an article last year or before criticising the KHSAA for this exact point.

It seems absolutely ridiculous to have teams battle their way to this point and have the bracket impact the outcome as obviously as it does. It's not like any of them lost a game to put themselves in this predicament - the KHSAA just simply allows a couple teams to be screwed, plain & simple.

 

I'm not familiar with the school schedules but this time of year shouldnt impact that to any degree. How about play all 1st round games on Sat, then go Mon & Weds.

 

They could look at Cliff Hagan field as well for flexibility. Play 2 games there and 2 games at Applebees on the first day/night so everyone is playing their 1st round on the same day/night. Then it's fair for all the kids - that is the goal, right?
