Sidenote: I now can see why soccer threads get a little over the top after sitting with parents. A few were wound tightly to say the least.

 

I won't disagree with you here and it's the reason I sit by myself. The ref was not very good but jawing at him hurt our cause more than it helped.

Pretty sure this is the first soccer game I've seen in 10 years. Picked a great one to go to. Highly skilled players who bust their hump. Day's goal happened so fast I didn't even see the beginning of it because I was watching MoCo fans on the fence jaw-jacking with Romes. Turned around and Day was going through the MoCo D with ease. Poor goalie had ZERO chance on that one.

Disagree on the easy call part of that. Not sure where you were situated but I was right there and the CCH player did play that ball away and the MoCo player went over after that. Ill-advised challenge? Maybe but the way MoCo was slide tackling all over the field........you don't call that to even the game.

 

After reading your summary, I realized while we were rooting for the same team, and obviously standing very near each other, we saw that play very differently. Your description makes it sound like it was a 50/50 ball, and I wouldn't paint it that way at all. The MoCo player had possession, #10 did appear to get the ball, but the tackle was very aggressive, and the resulting takedown, in my opinion, forced the Center to make the call. The second the play was made I said to those around me that it had to be called, a nanosecond later, it was.

 

Agree with you on the veracity of the tackles by MoCo all night, many of which were studs up. That said, I'd still have made the same call the center did, and I am 100% a CovCath guy.

All in all, I think the right team got the result. Saying CovCath left 4 goals out there is almost understating it. They have to cash those in to win Saturday (or beyond). Two open net finishes blown over the cross bar, one whiff on a perfect Day cross -- you have to have those.

I would agree about the call being correct....not necessarily easy. Both players on a breakaway going away from the CR who was trying to catch up to the play. The ball was actually moving away from the goal towards the end line when the slide took place. Backs to the CR, so not sure how much he saw. no need to slide, but was done anyway. CCH player did get the ball and then the MC player tripped,over.......no problem with that call.

 

The call I did have an issue with .....there were several. 33 seconds left in the game. MC kicks he ball towards the sideline and it is going out of bounds by the MC bench. Again CR trailing the play . CCH defender gets to the line and shields the MC player who runs into and over the back of the CCH defender. Ref calls kick for MC ....I guess to give them one more chance....

I don't know the rules of soccer very well, but to me that absolutely should have been a yellow card, just like the one on Dice later in the game.

 

I have seen it often and wish it got called more often. A player gets called for a foul and then kicks the ball away from the offensive player who is trying to get it set or they just kick it back down field.

 

Maybe it is a typically accepted in soccer, but I am always glad when it gets called because it looks like poor sportsmanship or at the very least a delay tactic.

MoCo drew a penalty in the box (easy call) with just under 4 minutes to play and evened the score on the subsequent PK.

 

While the building was bouncing, and the Indians were celebrating, Day took the kick off, slashed through the defense immediately, and got 1 on 1 with the keeper -- advantage Day. Really impressive goal :15 after the MoCo equalizer. Crazy.

"Read a little on the Day kid and although he played very well throughout the game I wasn't seeing the offensive power I expected and then in a matter of 13 seconds off a kickoff that kid put the team on his back and showed the entire stadium he was going to will his team to next the next round." Good luck CCH on Saturday. Looks to be a great matchup.

I had someone describe this play to me as well, they described it the same as you. They also said there was a similar call made against MoCo... also bad... but consistent.

 

I question how a CR could make these sort of calls. In a big match, you do not want something so immaterial having an impact on the match.

With that said, I like the moxie this CCH team has shown this last week. Two PK wins and they answered the call last night a couple of times as well. A lot of spirit on this team and win or lose on Saturday, they have shown well for themselves and all their supporters.

I'd say read your own description of the PK. Both players going for the ball, away from the goal and not towards it and the center ref behind the play and not in the best place to call a foul. A/R was there and did not put the flag up. In a game with a lot of studs-up, hard tackles that were not called I just feel this call was not consistent with how the rest of the game was called regarding slide tackles. Tough call not to make for a ref in front of that home crowd. In the end, Day made the call irrelevant thankfully.
