Dave Cantrall Rankings

Featured Replies

I'm not one to defend computer rankings but......

First.....all teams start with a number (usually based on last season). So a 8-2 team in the same class will likely have a higher number than a 5-5 team to start the season. And the 5-5 team will likely have a higher number than the 3-7 team.

Second.....a computer cannot take into account that Team A lost to Team B by a score of 7-6 with their starting QB, RB, and WR on crutches. The next week Team B beat Team C by the same 7-6 score with both teams at full strength. To a computer Team A and Team C lost by the same margin to Team B and are equal.

Third......out of state games do not count. So CovCath lopsided losses to Cincy St. X and Sycamore did not exist for their ranking.....or for KY teams that beat or lost to CovCath.

You just identified several of the problems with computer rankings in high school.

I don't see what issues are myself outside of a team here or there, but what polls are flawless? As a whole, I'm OK with these.

Ryle and Cooper needing to be flip flopped, Central Hardin being that high and no Louisville Central puzzle me.

Well again even if the rankings used what you described it shows even more how these rankings are flawed.

Cooper last year had a better record than Ryle. Cooper also beat Ryle this year. So how is Ryle 2 spots ahead?

Shout out to Seneca and JTown ranked ahead of 2 teams in 6A. Now that is a computer some folks in Louisville can appreciate. Nice to see both teams ranked ahead of someone!

Louisville Central's that high because of the strength of its non-district schedule, its defense (points per game allowed) and the fact it won a pretty decent district.

Central Hardin's that high because of its non-district strength of schedule. Central Hardin played BG, South Warren and Boyle (3 teams which would go 3-0 against 90 percent of the state).

This is CH's schedule according to CalPreps/MaxPreps (CH is 28 in those rankings, FWIW):

Losses:

06 Bowling Green

07 South Warren

10 Boyle County

Wins

43 Paducah Tilghman

47 John Hardin

61 Collins

65 North Hardin

100 Bullitt East

114 Meade County

That's seven games against top-65 teams (out of 221) and every game against a team in the top half of the state. No cupcakes.

It also helps Central Hardin that it beat who it was supposed to beat.

- Louisville Central would have been higher had it not lost to Knox Central.

- Boyle would be higher had it not lost to LexCath

- Bowling Green would be higher had it not gave up a ton of points in a loss to St. X

- McCracken would be higher if it hadn't lost to Tilghman

- Mayfield would be higher if it hadn't lost to McCracken

- Cooper would be higher if it hadn't lost to Station

Well again even if the rankings used what you described it shows even more how these rankings are flawed.

I've said this before: You absolutely CANNOT take head-to-head into account when looking at a computer list of 221 teams (Kentucky for C-J Litkenhous and LHL Cantrall) or more (nationally for MaxPreps/CalPreps). ... Because then you're saying that and ONLY that overrules points for, points allowed and who the teams played.

If we do all that head-to-head garbage, freakin Knox Central is a top-20 (maybe higher) team because it beat Louisville Central (which beat X).

Again your Cooper answer is flawed. Ryle played 3 winless teams and Cooper's SOS was better than Ryles which goes against your reasoning for the rankings. Face it, there is no way of justifying these bad rankings.

I would speculate that Ryle started with a higher number than Cooper because they were 6A last year. 6-4 in 6A and 6-4 in 5A and 6-4 in 2A would not have all have the same starting number.

And head to head does not mean as much to a computer as it does to humans. Taking out the other common losses and wins then Ryle has wins over CovCath and GRC and a loss to Cooper. Cooper has wins over NCC, Dixie, Ryle and a loss to Bryan Station. So that must have not been enough for a computer to move them ahead of Ryle.

I was referring to no Louisville Central as in, it puzzled me as to why they weren't in the overall Top 25.

As for Central Hardin, no big deal either way. I could see them sliding in that 25 spot and in that 25-30 range easy.

Rules to live by:

1) All polls have flaws

2) When in doubt refer to rule #1

For Louisville Central, that loss to Knox Central. According to CalPreps, it's one of the biggest upsets in the entire state. Take that loss out of the mix and Central shoots up the rankings (it is decently high now because of everything else in spite of that head-scratching loss).

Again your Cooper answer is flawed. Ryle played 3 winless teams and Cooper's SOS was better than Ryles which goes against your reasoning for the rankings. Face it, there is no way of justifying these bad rankings.

In the in-state only rankings (Lit, Cantrall), Ryle is given MORE CREDIT for its win over Cov Cath than the national computers (MaxPreps, CalPreps) because instate does NOT factor CovCath's 3 out-of-state losses).

Cooper is AHEAD of Ryle in the CalPreps rankings

So Ryle loses to Cooper, plays a weaker schedule, and they are ranked higher?

So Ryle loses to Cooper, plays a weaker schedule, and they are ranked higher?

For in-state (out of state wins NOT counted) such as LIT and Cantrall, Ryle's schedule is not that much weaker, if at all. For in-state, CovCath is ranked VASTLY different than out of state (because of CovCath's three out of state losses).

Plus, when you factor performance against common opponents, Ryle fared better (based on points allowed and point differential).

That being said:

- Knox Central beat Louisville Central

- Louisville Central beat St. X

Are you advocating for BOTH Knox Central and Louisville Central to be in the top 10 or so?
