Should be some good games the second week of the playoffs, best time of the year. Roll Cards!!

Honestly, I would prefer to see a matchup against Ashland. I would love to watch Quinten Baker play. Either way, I am not sold on either team considering their offensive woes their last game. If they can't score on each other, how will they score on what might be the #1 defense in the state?

 

I keep hearing about this supposed GREAT South Warren defense. Maybe best in the state.

South Warren has had a GREAT season so far and it may be even more special for them by the year end, but please quit pounding your chests like you have done something. You have played an average schedule but not a murders row by any stretch of the imagination.

No way Ashland stays ranked ahead of Shelby and probably Spencer. Shelby has played and won against better competition. After last week, they deserve the recognition.

I would argue if Ashland was in any other district in the state in Class AAAA they would be district champs (That includes South Warren as I don't think they have played a player nearly as good as Baler all year). They have played JC so often the past few years the coaches know each other better than their wives.

 

Ashland has beat George Washington a very good WV team and DESTROYED an Ironton team that played Beechwood very well.

 

So Shelby gets a bump from beating a sub 500 Collins team?

South Warren has yet to prove they can win the big game the last few years!!! They had this so called dominant "D" the last couple seasons in 3A and still haven't made it to BG

I gotta say I am intrigued about how good SW really is, but in my opinion the top 3 in 4A are likely pretty even. I haven't seen SW play, but I'm not naive enough to not think they have one of, if not the best defenses in 4a. But anyone who thinks its head and shoulders above Ashland or JC's defense is a homer, which is fine, but let's be real here.

 

On the other hand, does SW have enough offense to out score Ashland or JC, food for thought. That's my main question about SW. There has to be a reason why if SW has the best defense in their class seemingly every year they haven't capitalized on it yet and won a title. I'm a firm believer that defense wins championships, but when two great defenses face off, generally the team with the best offense wins.

First, you better check their defensive stats the past 3 seasons, not just this season. They have been the #1 or #2 defense the past three years in the State. Secondly, who says JC was really the #1 team in 4A? That is debatable within itself, so an Ashland loss by 1 to them means nothing to me....

Which begs an answer to my earlier question. How good is SW's offense? Defense generally wins chpionships, but when two great defenses line up against each other, the team with the best offense often prevails. Is that why SW has not been able to capitalise on their #1 or #2 defenses the past several years? There has to be a reason why if they are really that good they haven't brought home the hardware yet.

Also, are SW's opponents thus far 38-41 on the season, combined records? I just glanced it over and thats what I came up with in my head, I may be off by a few as I didn't use pen and paper to wright any of it down. But how is that considered a superior schedule? Just curious.

Just looked up opponents thus far for all 3. South's are 40-51 the out of district is 27-27 the district opponents are 13-24 and they can't help the district they are in and half to play.

I will agree that they are closer than people think. The last 3 or 4 teams seems to always be close. It's also hard to tell when you haven't seen teams play how strong some teams are or are not.

Calpreps is garbage. Just another computer ranking. I remember one or more of the SW guys saying Ashland and JC play weak schedules. I assume that means that SW played a weak one as well? Because at the moment it looks like Ashland played a slightly stronger schedule than SW or JC. My point isnt the schedules, its that these three teams are more even than some are willing to admit.
