Instead of looking for referee excuses, how about taking a hard look at a Highlands program that despite having what most would consider enough talent to work with, has lost to ND 3 straight years in Regionals, and hasn't won a Region since 2010. We always hear about all this great young Highlands talent coming up

I didn't read anywhere in here where anyone used the referee as an excuse. Which post suggests that?

Maybe the questions about whether he should have scratched because he works at CovCath could give someone that perception. None of those comments state that there was bias. If there was, it was pretty subtle since he didn't call much of anything and most of what he did call paled in comparison to what he let go.

You are correct regarding scratches. Each school can scratch X number of officials per season. Officials can scratch as many as they wish.

 

My understanding is that this is just during the regular season. It cannot be done in post season.....regionals, at least.

Having watched both teams multiple times this year, the result of this game did not surprise me. After the Highlands upset in their first meeting, there was absolutely no way ND was going to walk off the field with a loss last night. I predict ND has very little trouble with Boone County. In the 9th Region, like it or not, ND gets the best soccer players (cuts a bunch that could start at other programs) and everyone else is just playing for second.

No, he was equally bad. But I know officials are not allowed to ref games of the school they attended or rivals to avoid favoritism or perceived favoritism. If you say NDA and Cov Cath are not the same entity, you are lying to yourself.

That was a while ago. I think the last year was about 1999 or 2000.

So in basketball we bring in officials from outside the region, but in soccer where one call (or lack thereof) can literally decide a match the ref assigner puts a guy in the center of it all that many would have the perception (real or otherwise) of as being within the "same community" as one of the teams he is officiating? Makes perfect sense to me. :banana:

The last part of this statement is something that the girls basketball program was always accused of and probably holds true here to a certain point as well. When older kids are pushed aside for say middle school kids, the older kids decide to quit playing because they feel they are not one of the chosen ones. You then create a vicious cycle where kids just simply do not tryout for teams because they feel/perceive the deck is already stacked against them. The thing is you never know if that older kid might develop if given the chance that other kids are getting and the result is that your team is not getting to experience having a group of kids go through the entire program from middle school through high school. Sure you can be competitive along the way, but often times you just cannot get over the hump so to speak.

 

It is my understanding that a majority of the junior and senior classes were cast aside for younger players this year. The question will be if the program grows in numbers or if the kids that feel they are not one of the chosen ones just simply choose not to tryout.

 

Highlands is one of the few programs in NKY that has frosh, jv and varsity soccer. Will they be able to continue to do that if middle school kids are being needed at the JV level? Time will tell I guess on how things go from here on out.

Oldbird is correct. 9th region officials go elsewhere for the region tourney.

If there's enough officials to cover games in each region then it would be feasible from that standpoint. Travel and time of game is probably the bigger issue.
