Is McGuiness still churning out the yards for CCH? Does he play defense?

How has Boone been this year?

Their won-lost record is not good but does not tell the full tale. They are 2-5. They do have some football players. They feature two down-hill runners who can get yardage. There is a third back that is quicker and can get around the edge. I'd like to see him get more touches. QB is accurate when he has time. The passing game comes off of the run and is effective when given the opportunity. TE has quite a few nice catches. Slot receiver has a few touches. There is a core of players that are quite good. The line struggles at times but then will get a push for some nice yardage by their backs. There are a few soft spots in the lineup. It shows up on defense.

 

The difficulty with the offense is in scoring points. Seems like they move the ball down the field but can't get it in the end zone. CAse in point was against SK. Some observers thought it looked like we out gained them but couldn't cross the goal line. The only team that Boone wasn't able to generate anything on offense was against Cooper.

 

Two tough games coming up for the Rebels--Cov Cath this week and Conner next week--both at Boone.

 

Boone could use a few more horses so if you know anyone who is looking to move out of their old neighborhood, say in Union or some other place, be sure to look in the Florence area. :sneaky: Boone Co High School just received the highest marks for academics in the county.

Hey, there's the first surprise of the game. I am happy for the young man.

New coaching staff. Was Eviston still the head coach at NCC when Jacob Smith was a freshman? Smith played varsity as a freshman at NCC.

No idea if that's true but it wouldn't be a shocker. After seeing him play twice this year I thought he could contribute this year at the varsity level. CCH needs some more athleticism and explosiveness in its skill players.

I don't think that will keep him from finishing his freshman season playing freshman ball.

It's not what I expected. Reading about Cov Cath on here I expected them to score more points. I realize McGuiness didn't play.

 

Here's what I found surprising about the game (and I was only joking in my OP but Boone did actually surprise me in this game):

 

1. This should have been a blow out. It wasn't. Boone was in this game competing.

 

2. Boone showed up with a new offense. The game started like most of Boone's games. Opponent scores quickly and Boone runs their power attack. RB's churning out yards, 2, 3, 5, 10+ at a time but they come to a third and long and can't get the first down and punt. Other team scores again. Boone churns out yards with power running game. Get near goal line but can't get across. That's the way it started.

 

But at some point in the second quarter (I think), Boone put in a new offense. New quarterback, different set in the back field and varied it quite a bit. They started to pass the ball and found open receivers. TE caught several passes, a couple of long gainers. The running game wasn't really there but Boone was able to move the ball with QB moving out of the pocket and sometimes running and sometimes throwing. WR caught a long ball that was thrown up and kind of hung there but WR is a good athlete and took the ball out of the air and away from the defender. First down Boone County! Things opened up and Boone generated more offense in this one than any game I've seen them play. They had several scoring opportunities. Cov Cath mounted a great goal line stance. Boone had it down to the 5 yrd line and ran 4 times. First the QB, then the other three to the fullback. Cov Cath held. Boone's line couldn't get any push and there was no hole to go through. The back would hit a wall of human flesh made of light blue and white bodies and push forward. On fourth down he got to the goal line and the ref said he didn't get in. It was close, but Cov Cath took over on downs. Boone's coach didn't like the spot :sssh: and a penalty gave the Colonels some breathing room and Boone's best chance to score was gone.

 

There is a rule in HS football that I don't like. It favors the defense. On a pass play near the end zone, the receiver is running a route in the end zone and the defender interferes so that receiver can't catch the ball. A penalty is called, but the penalty is half the distance to the goal and it is a repeat down, not a first down. The interference cost the offense plenty because it took away a chance to score, but the consequence to the defense was minor, half the distance to the goal and repeat the down. They can do it again and still it is half the distance to the goal and repeat the down. Seems like there should be a higher cost to the defense when they prevent a score through interference, like awarding a 1st down to the offense--but that's another thread.

 

Back to Boone's offense, I like the new look. It opened things up and Boone moved the ball really well. I do feel bad for the starting QB because he didn't get an opportunity to run the new set. He may have done well with it also. He did get to play LB in the second half and did quite well. I know that he could also play corner very well and safety.

 

Boone still had trouble getting it into the end zone last night but it seemed different in this game. It had more to do with Cov Cath's stout defense on the goal line than it did Boone's offense not executing.

 

One more game for Boone against cross county rival Conner. Game will be Thursday at Boone at 6 pm.

 

I did notice a familiar name or two on Cov Cath's side of the ball. I wondered what happened to Michael Spencer. He's a great kid, very competitive and a good athlete. I looked for him when we played Cooper and wondered why I didn't see him in the that game. That's because he is now at Cov Cath. Also noticed another BCPWFL kid for Cov Cath. He would have looked better in a Boone uniform :sneaky: (at least to me).
