Just shows stats are unreliable, inconsistent, and at times a joke. A lot of schools use a student manager to keep stats, friend of the players. The players come to the bench and say to their friend keeping stats, " you put me down for an assist on that goal right?"

That is funny. I saw The coach's daughter put two in from about 30 yards out in a different game. Very nice shots. One was a direct kick, but someone could have set the ball down on the ground for her. That counts, right?

I vote to do away with stats completely. Would be very interesting to see who wins OPOY with no stats. IMO the best true player would win, not necessarily the one with the most goals, assists, etc. Stats are way over rated in HS sports, due to the disparity in level of competition each team plays, the way some coaches handle their teams, etc. Many players with a high number of goals get a ton of goals vs very weak teams, and some coaches keep them in these one sided games just to pad their stats.

Makes you view the state assist leader board a little differently when you add the overall assist ration (total A / total goals):

 

Layne Cutler - 27 assists

Bullitt East: 57% A/G

 

Jordan Stallings - 27

Nelson County: 70% A/G

 

Annabel Moore - 24 assists

Owensboro Catholic: 100% A/G

 

Abigail Zoeller - 24 assists

Simon Kenton: 99% A/G

 

Angie Reyes - 24 assists

Warren Central: 60% A/G

 

What's more egregious: leaving a player in a blow-out game to pad stats or giving them credit for phantom assists?

 

And how do you decide who to give a phantom assist to? Closest relative to the ball?

 

Answer to the question in bold--though it is a rhetorical question: It's worse to give credit for a phantom assist because it is a bald-faced lie. If you leave a player in during a blow-out game to pad stats, the player at least does kick the ball for a goal. No lie involved, just not very sportsman-like.

Two more thoughts:

 

- Based upon Yellow Card's math above, SK's ladies only had one goal more than they had total assists in the regular season. Plus we know in both the Cooper and WV games the lady Neers scored 6 goals and 5 were assisted - that can only mean that sometime during the season the team achieved the rarest of rare, a legendary double assisted goal. I have never actually seen or experienced this, but oh I have heard the tales of such a magical event. I think Scott boys were able to see and experience this on multiple occasions last season.

 

- Second last night it appears the SK girls scored 2 unassisted goals, which doubles their unassisted goals for the year. That makes 3 of the last 5 games the girls have had unassisted goals after not having any up until that point.

People tend to be more selfish during the Regionals

 

Zoeller had a team-leading 12 assists last year at SHA. One of the best teams in the state. And no one else (at SHA) had more than 6 assists. Let's assume that she can pass.

 

She had 23 assists (team high by 6) and 18 goals (third best on team) as a freshman for the state runner-ups.

 

Three straight years with 14 goals/12 assists (unless you're calling out SHA stats, too) for a region champ. No matter what the numbers say, it's clear she's an impact player.

That being said, North Hardin and John Hardin boys have both given out double assists in the past few seasons.

 

Corner Kick - Header across box - one touch goal.

 

Throw in - redirect - one touch goal.

 

Free kick - header or redirect - goal.

 

I've seen all three of those plays result in goals over the last two seasons (and two of the three this season alone). Double assist is warranted.

 

Same thing for a long thru ball from a defender up top and an immediate cross from a wing to a striker. Double assist is OK in that instance.

 

That all being said, SK should be missing an assist for shootout win (team goal, no assist) and any time you get a PK or score directly off a direct.

There is no doubt Zoeller (the player) is an impact player. There is also little doubt that Zoeller (the dad) is an impact stat producer. :banana:

If true, congrats to both ladies!

 

Zoeller has had a great season. While much has been made about her assist total, she has assisted on a bunch of goals for teammates all season. She moves really well without the ball. To me this was the obvious pick for 8th region POY.

Teams that are found to have elevated stats, should have some repercussions in the voting of opoy and dpoy........perhaps the loss of a vote for every 2 mis represented?

Stats aren't the end all but everyone views them differently. Some coaches are tight on assists, some aren't and some don't give assists at all. Neither is right or wrong. Watch a kid play and you can see who can play and who can't.

Do all of the coaches in each region vote? If so, then should all of the teams in that region be required to play each other? This way each coach will have had the opportunity to see all of the possible players up for each category against their own team.

But all coaches can't play all teams.......there has to be at least some guide/gauge....

 

ie....Coach A can't see player B play, but both played Team C and Player B scored X amount of goals against them. So Coach A now has some reference point on player B...... Y, because we love you.....M.O.U.S.E
