Soccer Thread in Football Forum

Featured Replies

Someone just started a soccer thread in the football forum that is asking if the rise in the popularity of soccer in the US is going to effect the numbers of kids playing football.

Some of you who really love soccer may want to provide some insight in that thread.

Not trying to start a soccer v football scrum (how's that for mixing sporting metaphors?) but thought you all might have something constructive to add to that thread.

I'm tempted to move that thread in the soccer forum. We need the credit for those "hits" in here. Football forum does not need to use the word "soccer" to get more traffic. Or maybe they do? :sssh:

Cool! I may have started a scrum between BGP moderators. :taz:

It's a football thread asking about declining numbers in football.

I just read it and it's pretty funny really. All the comments about how the "unathletic" kids can play soccer so that's why it's popular, etc. As opposed to all those gazelles playing on the offensive and defensive lines in high school football that are so darned athletic.

Let's take the 11 most athletic kids from the CCH soccer team and the 11 most athletic kids from the CCH football team and have a decathlon shall we? I'm guessing the soccer players won't need to rush to the bench for a drink every 5-10 minutes like they do in football either.

Decathlon would only work for the footballer if they have weeks to practice every exact step along the events and in-between each attempt they get to have their coach remind them again of exactly how, when and where to run, jump, throw, lift, etc.

The anti-soccer crowd never misses a chance to get super reactionary. It'd be funny if it wasn't so disappointing.

The Beautiful Game lives on, with or without them.

Hoops......now that the thread on the football forum is about to be on page 3, bring it over now.......That will really fan the fire.......

I can't decide if people took that thread the wrong way intentionally or because they didn't get the "canary" reference. I don't know why I was surprised.

Both can coexist.

But the football crowd is more concerned/threatened with the futbol crowd than vice versa.

I think the only people who took the thread the wrong way is the football folks. Rarely, if ever, will you hear soccer people talking down about football or the negatives that might be associated with it but that does not go both ways. Football is great, one of my favorite sports to watch, college and pro. Soccer will never overtake football in the American psyche and that's fine with me. The silly comments about un-athletic kids playing soccer, it's boring, blah, blah, blah.....those are mostly people who have never been to a higher level game or tried to play the game.

.....and, not all football folks took it the wrong way. Put me in the camp of both can co-exist. Matter of fact, put me in the camp that wishes both could be played in different seasons b/c of the cross-over I think you would see. They compliment each other very well.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but isn't soccer played in the spring down south? Matter of fact, I think that Kentucky is the only state south of the Ohio that plays soccer in the fall.

I believe that is because KY is in Region 2 for club soccer.

I couldn't find the thread but from reading above sounds like people are scared of the popularity. Athletically different sports- what soccer player is asked to do as an athlete is very different than football and vice versa. I would say high level players in each sport would be very athletic but again different attributes.
