Boone County High School is landlocked, no real estate for growth. Numbers will not go up unfortunately. The football program has been in a downward direction for many years. However, why is it just football in this case, other sports in the school don't seem to be affected by it? They have been very successful in the district in basketball, soccer, baseball...why is it just with the football program? :confused:

 

I believe it's because of the number of athletes needed to compete in each sport.

 

Baseball in high school is a very much pitcher driven sport. You have a couple good pitchers and avg hitters and you can do pretty good.

 

Basketball is the same, fewer good athletes needed to be successful.

 

Soccer, I haven't followed Boon Soccer enough to know how they've been recently.

 

Football, you need great lines and pretty good skill position players to be successful and Boone just doesn't have the number of athletes needed.

The reason Cooper and Ryle have their feeder programs is because years back whenever BCPWFL was approached and asked to have their teams associated with the 4 High Schools in the county, the league always put up a front and refused to do so. If they would have associated the pee wee teams with the high schools then all the kids could play for the team that was representative of the school they would go to once they reached 9th grade and not only would the kids have years of playing together etc. but the schools would also know what they had coming up. BCPWFL had always refused to go that route and it never made sense why. So Ryle and Cooper both formed their own junior teams for the middle school kids and it feeds right into the high school teams. That is another reason that Boone has fallen behind. Just one of many reasons.

 

Personally I think egos got in the way with the BCPWFL. There are some teams, and I wont need to name them, that have coaches that think that winning at all cost is the most important thing instead of preparing the kids for the future. Some didn't want their "dynasties" split up. It was so bad at times that there would be a team for instance, even though there was supposed to be a draft to select the players for the teams, yet one team always seemed to have triple the amount of kids on their team while others scraped up just enough kids to field a team.

Just a shame how that league has been run into the ground. Was once a great league has become nothing more than an after thought lately.

Suffice to say, the Boone Co High Schools - and Boone Co in particular- didn't do any favors in cooperating with the BCPWFL either. That sword cuts both ways.

I'm sure it does as there are always 2 sides to every story. I only know what transpired while I was involved and that was a while back in the years up to 2009.

You don't need as much talent.

Boone County High School used to get all those big strong farm boys for their offensive line but those areas have been hived off and now go to either Ryle or Cooper.

Just a thought. Ryle, Cooper, and now Conner with the Bandits all have youth programs that are more local to their schools that over the years develops a core of kids that have played together. The BCPWFL is very good but as far as I know most teams practice e in Burlington (sometimes a long trip to and from). A Rebel youth team could practice in Florence and possibly keep that core of players at Boone

The biggest reason for some teams having more kids is because some coaches are better than others. Parents talk and ask who they think are the better coaches and they take their kids to those coaches and teams. I am pretty sure I know where your kid played and watching that team practice was pitiful. Probably the biggest reason for the Union Raiders, IMO, because a couple of dads put their money where their mouth is when the league didn't react as fast as they liked. All because they didn't want to play for those couple of coaches.

 

The dynasty comment I am curious about, because keeping kids together is exactly what you are suggesting should happen. The draft originally was set up to keep teams as even as possible. Some guys sucked at it and didn't care, they would have been better pulling names out of a hat. Did it finally become necessary for the league to split into feeders for the high schools, yes. Should they have done it a year or two before they did, yes.

 

I ask this all the time, what age do you stop preparing for the next level and winning games matters? Why don't we have minimum playing time for high school? Why don't we have minimum playing time for middle school basketball teams?

 

If you teach kids how to play, play hard, compete hard, block, tackle, and learn the overall fundamentals wins take care of themselves. What you find out is that coaches at all levels that demand these things from themselves and their players are the ones that win a lot more often than not. Then because they win consistently, those on the outside think that is all they worry about, when it is more the opposite of that approach.

The teams I was talking about that had 3 times the number of players of others was long before Union Raiders and Jags were formed. They were Napiers teams if you really must know. It was ridiculous how he would thwart the system. Also as far as winning, his teams seldom won a lot when I was there. My sons team beat his team every year he played them. So it isn't a jealousy thing nor did his ways affect us but more so other teams that would only have 13 players compared to his 45 etc. wasn't speaking because it affected us at all. Simply speaking for those teams it did affect.

I think you have me mistaken for someone else and if you must know he played for the Tigers in the senior division and went to back to back SB's when he was on that team and before that played for the Mustangs as they also won the SB and before them as a starter and midget played for the Bulldogs. All finished near the top of their divisions every year he played. Like I said earlier, he played before the union jags and raiders were formed.

I am glad you know where the Union Jags play, now tell me what is different from them compared to the other teams in the league?

I know who your kid played for he was #12 in the 6th grade. The coach following Matteoli, was who I was specifically referencing, he was an assistant when your son played. Playing for Perkins and Hollis on the Tigers, is a good thing because they do a wonderful job IMO.

 

Napier's team did not draft players, because the kids that played on that age group were not drafted, because you could sign up for what team you wanted to play for at the time. Also, he did not have anymore kids than a few other teams at the time. In fact for years the Bearcats had more players than any other team.

 

The bottom line is that now the league is aligned with the high schools. Does that help the high schools overall, IDK?

Take a breath, guys! Sorry to butt in to this "boone county" thread, but I want to add in my congrats to the young men in Campbell Co, it was quite a performance for the young camels.
