Bluegrasspreps' Class 3A Rankings 9-21-15

I agree.

Especially as long as Christian County keeps winning.

I'm with you. And the same is true the other way around--if PT has its way with Caldwell.

Still, I think it's those top 3 with a possibility of LexCath too.

I don't have a real rooting interest in HS football, but 3A is by far the best class to follow this year.

If either PT or Caldwell have a decisive victory this Friday. That team IS a top 3 team no way around it. A close battle between the two should only allow them to move up to #4 barring upsets to teams ahead of them. Too bad the rankings don't have more value come playoff time. Would make for a wild ride in 3A, and some classics after the first round. With the west being so much better this season, spreading them out in a playoff format would lead to an all west title game, maybe even final four.

Nah...

Boyle, Belfry, and Central are pretty solid in those Top 3 spots.

4th? Maybe... although LexCath may have something to say about that... but no way can you say they are a more deserving team than either Boyle, Belfry, or Central

Here is where we will disagree, again. Belfry has, to say the least, a skeptical schedule against that of Caldwell or PT. A convincing win would vault either of these teams into the top spots with Boyle, Central, Belfry, and LexCath. I am certain that Belfry and LexCath would be on the bottom side of those 5 if that scenario plays out. If not, its a mute point. Belfry will remain high simply because they don't play in the west and their schedule resembles that fact. LexCath to be considered a top 3 team would have to give Boyle all they wanted to get into the conversation, otherwise they would fall prey to the same consideration IMO.

You are criminally underselling Belfry's schedule

They play:

#1 (Overall) Cabell Midland, WV

#1 4A Johnson Central

#7 4A Knoxville Catholic

#3 1A Pikeville

#7 2A NewCath

Not Ranked 5A Harlan County

Not Ranked 6A Tates Creek

Not Ranked 3A Lawrence County

By contrast for Caldwell:

#2 2A Mayfield

#6 5A Christian County

#6 3A Paducah Tilghman

Not Ranked 4A Franklin Simpson

Not Ranked 6A Henderson County

Not Ranked 6A North Hardin

Not Ranked 1A Crittenden County

Cabell Midland> Mayfield

Johnson Central > Christian County

Knoxville Catholic > Tilghman

Pikeville > Franklin-Simpson

NewCath= Henderson County

Tates Creek= North Hardin

Lawrence County > Crittenden County

Belfry hasn't even gotten into the hardest part of their schedule yet or played the three best teams left and Calpreps still has their schedule to this point as essentially an equal to Caldwell's for the games that has alreayd been played.

Belfry is Top 3 because they are the defending 3A State Champs who return 7 Starters each way and have already had two nice wins over NewCath and Pikeville.

Actually Belfry remains that high because they are "the defending State Champions in 3A." That goes a long way to ranking.

Technically Defending Back to Back 3A State Champs.

It also doesn't hurt when you have been to the 3A Finals for 5 Straight Years and have only failed to reach the State Semi-Finals once in the past 12 years. Gives a little credibility.

I have a hard time with the "defending state champions" argument to why Belfry is ranked so high. Although, I believe it is true and hard to say that they will not appear in this year's state title game in 3A. The point is that if you replace Belfry with Caldwell or Tilghman in the east that they would be the odds on favorites to appear in a state title game from the east side of the bracket, and Belfry would be ranked then about 6 or 7 trying to get out of the west side of the bracket. No one is arguing that Belfry has had an impressive run (at least not me) in the east side of 3A for the past 8 years. The argument (made by me) is that said run probably does not exist in a full state format or playing from the west side. For instance (given the current rankings) in order to reach the state finals this year Belfry could face Caldwell in the quarters, Central in the Semis, and get Boyle in a title game. Not near what they will see in the current format. Boyle getting there would likely face Tilghman in the quarters, LexCath in semis, and Belfry in finals. Basically what Boyle will see regardless (with rankings holding serve).IMOWAFN.

Which side of the bracket you are on has ZERO bearing on where you are ranked in the regular season.

Had Belfry been in the West is in 3A te past two years Belfry still would have finished #1 and State Champs because they were the best team.

What part of Caldwells resume is more inpressive than what Belfry has done? What has Caldwell done so far that merits they should be in the conversation except for a close loss to Christian County?

Caldwell is yet to defeat a ranked team and has lost a game. Belfry has defeated two ranked teams. Yet Caldwell somehow has a better reason to be ranked higher because they may have to play a tougher playoff path?

LOL I have heard some homer logic but this takes the cake.

Let us not overlook that according to Calpreps Belfry has beat three teams that are ranked higher than Caldwells best win thus far.

When you return 7 starters on defense from the previous State Champ x2, you are one of the favorites.

Belfry is a great team and is solidly in the top 3 contenders in 3A, but what happened in past years is irrelevant and should have ZERO impact on this years rankings.

I'll say:

1-Boyle Co

1A - Belfry

3 - Central

4 - LexCath

5-PT/Caldwell winner

I'd say this has a lot to do with where Belfry is ranked. Just a guess.
