What's Wrong With Walton-Verona Football?

Featured Replies

The Bearcats are 0-3. This is the worse start I have seen. I am assuming it is a rebuilding year?

Lost lots of talent to graduation. It is a rebuilding year plain and simple. WV has been in each game they have played thus far this season. There has been no quit by either the boys or coaches. IMO, theses things happen and considering how young the program actually is it is not shocking that WV us having a down season so far. A lot can change once district play starts. The ship will right itself.

I would agree they have been in every game except their last one, a loss to Henry by 28. I think the fact that they don't play fluff games to start the season and they play good teams pre district says a lot. Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way in close games.

From what I can tell they are young, they have had great success at the middle school level, if those kids continue to grow as football players the next few years should be fun at WV.

How many of those players ended up at Walton this fall? I know at least a few contributors aren't at Walton anymore.

They will be fine. Have lost some close games. Look for them in the playoffs

Lack of talent. It's cyclical at all schools, just more noticeable at the smaller levels.

Only saw one game so far, but looked noticeably smaller than past seasons. Gauging scores, looks like they've been in every game with the exception of Henry Co. Hopefully that means Henry was noticeably better and not players giving in. Another tough test against 4-0 Lexington Christian this week. A strong pre-district schedule should help in the weeks to come, good luck Bearcats!

It shouldn't be at WV, IMO. I think they are a underachieving football program in NKY. Being an independent, they are in a position to more easily attract out of district students. With a top notch academic reputation, one would think there should be no problem having kids in their area, outside of the district enrolling. I would think their geographical location, kids from Grant, Owen, and Gallatin Counties along with SE Kenton County and Southern Boone County might entertain the idea of attending WV. If they just got one good athlete a year or every other year from the 5 areas I mentioned, they should be competing for state titles. On top of the academics they have great facilities in place for their football program to be a annual state contender.

That's an interesting point.

Rule 4

They will be fine. Coach Barth took an NCC like approach and increased his level of competition outside of his district. They are going to take their lumps but they will be fine come playoff time. By no way do they have the strength of schedule as say an NCC team but they aren't playing an easy schedule. They lost a ton of talent to graduation and it takes time to develop talent. Coach Barth is one of the best coaches in NKY and his team will be ready to play come districts.

That's an interesting point.

They are very strict with students from outside the district. They don't take alot and being good a football is not an exemption to their out of district student standards. Far from underachieving though with the program.

Rule 14

They could have played a schedule of 1A and some of the weaker 2A teams and be 3-0 and no one would be questioning it. But they chose to play a decent schedule and we be better for it. They had a solid 2A team the last 3 or 4 years......maybe not ready to win a Region but certainly competitive. This year might end up that way too.

It is not like the other top independents in NKY just take anyone either, regardless of athletic ability. I guess agree to disagree on what level the program is at or should/could be.
