It is not like the other top independents in NKY just take anyone either, regardless of athletic ability. I guess agree to disagree on what level the program is at or should/could be.

 

Just curious where do you think they should be? They are seventh year of Varsity football with no tradition of playing fooball. Obviously they were not known for playing football. They started with kids who did not know how to put on a football uniform or get in a stance of any kind. They have no football alumni that isn't only a year or two out of college now. They have had five players go on to play at the next level four NAIA and one playing D1. They have been to a regional final losing to the state champions that year. They have been in the playoffs every year with the exception of their first district year. They have had a top ten defense and offense in 2a almost every year. The road ran through Beechwood when they were in 1a and now through Newport Central Catholic two long time state champions or finalist every year. Not a bad start in my opinion. I am also curious also about drawing kids from Grant, Gallatin and Owen. Do you think that if an allstar team of composed of the best players of each would consistently beat Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic?

Yes, it is a totally new experience for most everyone, but I would think WV would be a top ten team in their class, by now. No doubt, having Beechwood and NCC in their class does make it tough to make a deep run in the playoffs, there is no arguing that point. But I don't think how deep a team goes into the playoff is an end all measuring stick to the success or failure of a program.

 

I do think that if you added 3-5 varsity starters, from the areas I mentioned, that WV would be better on the football field. That is only 3-5 in a given year in grades 10-12, so like one in each class. To me there is no reason there shouldn't be at least two per class moving the total number of out of district starters up to 6. Does this mean they are beating Beechwood or NCC, not necessarily, but they would have a better chance.

 

I am shocked that they have not had more kids play college. Every kid that graduated could have played college football, not get scholarship money but they could play. But most times it is a case of kids choosing not to prolong their careers.

 

Being on on the outside like I am, I am probably just oversimplifying things.

 

I do think that having Cole playing at UK, plus getting a well deserved scholly, will be a huge boost to the program. Now, parents and kids at WV have that example of what football can do for someone when considering college. The boost might not be felt immediately but in the next few years, folks around the program will be able to look back and see the impact it made.

It shouldn't be at WV, IMO. I think they are a underachieving football program in NKY. Being an independent, they are in a position to more easily attract out of district students. With a top notch academic reputation, one would think there should be no problem having kids in their area, outside of the district enrolling. I would think their geographical location, kids from Grant, Owen, and Gallatin Counties along with SE Kenton County and Southern Boone County might entertain the idea of attending WV. If they just got one good athlete a year or every other year from the 5 areas I mentioned, they should be competing for state titles. On top of the academics they have great facilities in place for their football program to be a annual state contender.

Of course they would be better but the question was not if they would be better but beating New Cath and Beechwood consistently. The answer is no but none of the schools mentioned have been playing football as long as New Cath or Beechwood. Have you ever driven from Gallatin or worse Owen to Walton in the winter time in inclement weather? From either area it is a long drive with good weather. Not practical option for the most part but from Grant maybe but from there if you are motivated that much by football you have alot of options. Walton has had players from Grant before and currently do. It is going in the right direction but it will take time and building of alumni to do it. This year the level is down and the schedule was tougher to combine for a rough start. They will be fine, this freshman class is very good and could be one of the best ever.

Walton maybe a bit down this year, but "under achievers," is simply silly. Not even a decade into the program, I'd argue they are over achievers. Since 2010, the third year of the program, they've won at least 8 games every year, and at least 1 playoff win every season but 2011.

2010: 8-4, District Runner-up to Beechwood, won 1st playoff game, cracked 1A Top 10.

2011: 8-3, District Runner-up to Owen Co (11-1 that year) First year in 2A

2012: 10-3, District Champ, Regional Finalist, cracked 2A Top 10

2013: 9-3, District Runner-up

2014: 10-2, District Champ, cracked 2A Top 10.

2015: 0-4, time will tell by season's end.

 

I'd say nothing is wrong with Walton-Verona football. The men need to fight through a tough start in a new schedule cycle after losing arguably their most productive senior class. Good luck Friday in Lexington and into district play!

Gonna be a tough one for Walton down in Lexington, adding to fact, Catlett, the Bearcats stand out DL, will be most likely sidelined with a concussion. Not only making plays but making players for LBs. big loss for them tonight

They lost two solid freshmen to Beechwood & some sophmores decided not to play this fall. Hard to have that, but especially at a small school like WV. Bad news is this is a down year, good news is the young players are getting experience & have some talent. They should be fine once they start their district games.

As far as next year I believe they will have many younger players with some great experience from this year.
