North Carolina Judges refuse to marry Same Sex Couples

So I guess this means, since I'm Catholic, I can now refuse to serve people meat on Friday, as long as I bring up its my religious freedom? (If I worked in the service industry?

Only during Lent

But there are a number of Catholics who do not eat meat on Wednesday or Friday all year long. In fact, the practice of not eating meat on any Friday goes back to early Christianity, and it was a mortal sin to eat meat on any Friday. And recently in the U.S. there has been a call to return to eating no meat on any Friday.

Or sell condoms if you work at Walgreens. Or if you're Muslim, can't work at Kroger because they sell ham. Better not hire any Hindu's at McDonald's.

Just so we're clear on the office of a judge: they have the power to marry people; they have no responsibility or duty to do so.

That's a side question I had. How does that work? Do you show up to court and get put on a schedule for the day or do you pre-arrange for a date or a particular judge in advance or something else?

I'm glad you're around to keep us off the bus to Stupidville.

I know who some of the former mayors are.

You can ask if a judge will marry you. You'll do it in advance so that the judge has set aside time for the ceremony. It's not long, but at least around here, you'll need to work it out beforehand. If you know a certain judge, you can just ask him or her if you can have it done in chambers.

A friend of mine who is an assistant commonwealth attorney here in Louisville just asked a judge he was particularly close to if he would do it and they conducted the ceremony during a short lull in the docket one afternoon.

That makes the judge question a little different for me. I was thinking of the judge in Washington who declined to perform same-sex marriages. I might be wrong, but the language in the NC bill makes it seem like magistrates can be charged for not performing a wedding. But as long as a judge can decline to perform a marriage for any other reason and that someone else can be scheduled for the couple I don't have much of a complaint.

I didn't read anything about NC. I probably should have. KY judges are under no obligation.

I take it that it differs by state? I was just curious because there is a judge in Oregon that is refusing to perform weddings and he may face potential punishment.

Rented an apartment there for most of my 20's.

The fact that so many people are wasting so much energy and time on trying to prevent gay couples from being able to marry is an embarrassment to our society. Just think of all the good we could be accomplishing if we focused that energy and time on something that is a real issue in our country like hunger or poverty?
