Playoff Round 4 - what happens?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what will happen in Round 4 of the playoffs? Who will play what team and where?

For example, I projected last year's 4A playoffs using this year's model...

Round Three - Projected:

Warren Central v Henderson Co

John Hardin v Boone County

St. X v Trinity

Henry Clay v Madison Central

What happens next? Who will host the games?

Maybe they can have a "blind draw"

It would most likely be a "blind draw" hosted by the school with the best following.

What if everyone played their own district in the first two rounds, THEN seeded the last 3 rounds.....that makes it a bit more fair, right?

Thought a serious post was needed here. For round 4, the winners of region 1 and 2 face off, and the winners of region 3 and 4 face off. Since 06 is an even numbered year, the winners of regions 2 and 4 will host.

Well, that can't be true leather....there won't be a region two winner in 4-A since one district of region two will play one district of region three in the third round......

For AAAA under the revised tourny rules, AAAA-1 third round game is between district 1 vs. district 2. In the fourth round, the winner of that game plays the winner of AAAA-2 district 3 vs district 6 third round game. The game between the winner of AAAA-1 vs the winner of AAAA-2 will be played at the home site of the AAAA-2 team since 06 is an even numbered year. On the other side, AAAA-3, involves district 4 vs district 5 in the third round. The winner of that game in the fourth round plays the winner of AAAA-4 third round game which is between district 7 vs district 8. The winner of the AAAA-4 third round game (again between districts 7 and 8) will host the fourth round game against the winner of AAAA-3 third round game (again between districts 4 and 5). Hope that helps. I understand your confusion because you are thinking regions as in a different sense that was used for the draw. From what I understand (and I'm learning more from my "sources"), when it came time to do the draw, in order to prevent the fiasco in the past when some team from eastern Ky had to travel clear across the state in a playoff game, the KHSAA employee began by separating districts 1 and 2 from 7 and 8 in each class. Which only makes sense from a travel cost, attendance and fan convenience perspective (which were the same reasons they went with the first two rounds being within the districts). In other words, it was going to be impossible for a 1 or 2 district team to play a 7 or 8 district team in the third round. From there I'm still not sure what happened but I have to assume (and this is what I would have done) that he put numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 into a hat and left out 7, 8 and 1. His first pull determined who district 1 was going to play. Looking at 1A, he must have pulled 2 to play district 1 ( 1 in 5 chance of that happening. Not that excessive of odds). He put those two districts in region 1. He then pulled two numbers out to determine who would play in what he calls region 2 (which is not necessarily region 2 in the alignment layout) and pulled numbers 3 and 4 in succession. He then put number 7 into the hat with the remaining numbers of 5 and 6. He then pulled a number to see who would play district 8 in what he calls region 4. He pulled number 7 (with a 1 in three chance of that happening). Of course the two remaining numbers, 5 and 6, he put in region 3. I AM ASSUMING THIS IS WHAT HE DID. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT YET IF THIS WHAT THE PROCESS THAT WAS USED. But I do know that he made sure that a district 1 and district 2 team would not have to travel to play a district 7 or district 8 team in the third round. In fact a district 1 or district 2 team, if they won in the third round, would not have to play a district 7 or 8 team in the fourth round. The only way a district 1 or 2 team as I understand it will ever have to play a district 7 or 8 team would be in the state finals. Again, in order to cut down considerable cross state travel.

I kind of figured it was something like that, but shouldn't the KHSAA have come out and said that from the beginning?

Still, I have trouble with a "draw" where teams can't be paired with any of the other teams in the field. In the end, teams on either extreme end of the state might have an advantage or disadvantage in the draw, depending on the pairings.

Wow, thank you again leatherneck

When battling with the conspiracy theorists that is exactly what I said was the proper way they should have done it:

pull the #'s 7/8 out when drawing #'s 1/2 to eliminate the travel problem. It still leaves us with a nice rotation with 5 other districts. So what if not a precise draw of all possible. Only selfish fans would look to see if it helps/benefits certain teams - it's just a nice version to try.

I agree westsider.....i know the travel and expenses would be tough for a 1 to go to an 8...but doesn't seem fair you tell four districts they play the same teams they always have and then the other four you draw...

Your point is valid but a #1 region for example would still rotate between 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , and 6 regions over a 5 yr period. Thats a pretty good variation don't you think? especially in light of our rather repetitive set up now.

Yes, on paper it's not a pefectly balanced plan but without doing a specific study of "who" may or may not gain "something" from this I think it's seems reasonable.

I still don't understand how you divide up and determine region champions.

What if 7 plays 5 and 8 plays 6. If both 7 and 8 win, which is the Region 4 champ and which is the Region 3 champ? If both 5 and 6 win, which is the Region 3 champ and which is the Region 4 champ?
