The Cars debut album was such an innovative gem while bringing the then underground new wave sound to the masses with fun infectious memorable sing along pop tunes that proved not to be too weird for the rock audience that wasn't quite ready for the whole genre, and a few years ahead of the trend, and before MTV blew it wide open with what we remember to be the hugely popular synth pop 80's sound.

 

Songs like "Good Times Roll", "My Best Friend's Girl", and "Just What I Needed" got most of the attention, but the entire release was solid bliss start to finish. The two closing tracks "Moving in Stereo" & "All Mixed Up" were just as groovy to me as the aforementioned hit tunes that kicked off the album.

 

It puzzles me somehow that after one groovy release after another throughout the late 70's and into the 80's that they seem to be often overlooked when people speak of awesome classic bands of the era. Perhaps since they were so one of a kind and original people unfortunately tend to forget about them.

 

If you've forgotten, treat yourself and you'll likely find that they were so much groovier than you might've remembered.

That's a freaky coincidence that we were both on the same Cars trip this morning. I'm not real sure what even made me think of them, but something in the wind must've whispered that it's been far too long, and that it was about time to give it a spin.

Just for kicks for anyone who might be interested, here's a real nice cover of the Cars debut album closing track "All Mixed Up" performed in 1996 by Red House Painters.

 

They took a good song and added a ton of feeling to it opening it up to really bring out its meaning that might've been overlooked when listening to the original.

I started out this morning with Van Halen, 1984 and then VH1. Moved to Heartbeat City just randomly, then to the Cars first album. Back to Asia that I was listening to yesterday.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Second Helping" will always be known as the album that birthed "Sweet Home Alabama" on the world, and it also contained other classic cuts such as "Call Me The Breeze," "Workin' For MCA" and "Don't Ask Me No Questions," but the record's standout is clearly "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew."

 

Quite possibly my favorite LS song.

Going to cheat a little bit here. The album this Heart song was on did nothing, but the song when released as a single did get to #24 . However, it never seems to be played anymore on the rock stations and probably a lot are not familiar with it. It is one of their better songs I think.

 

Just reminds me of how great a voice Ann Wilson really possessed.

 

I just found out it's Geddy Lee's birthday. In honor of that and trying to keep with the theme of this thread...an underrated song on an underrated album, overshadowed by Moving Pictures.

Always liked the two little acoustic ditties on Jethro Tull's classic "Aqualung" - Cheap Day Return and Wond'ring Aloud.

My thoughts immediately went to Aqualung, also. "Wind up" & "Locomotive Breath" are both awesome (as is most of the album).
