NC public school conferences unanimously drop Catholic school from schedule

Featured Replies

Is it possible that the economic downturn of a few years back has prompted the success of some Fayette publics that may have traditionally lost kids to Lexington Catholic? Catholic has clearly lost enrollment (moving from 4A to 3A) and perhaps it is because parents can't afford the tuition at private schools. Just a theory.

Actually, enrollment at LexCath is at or near all-time high. The shift class seems to be drive by most schools growing. Remember that Boyle Co also dropped to 3A with LexCath.

The economy may be a factor, especially for those who were struggling to send kids to a private/Catholic school before.

I do believe a lot of credit has to go to the coaches of Bryan Station, Lafayette, Henry Clay. They have laid a foundation and worked on the programs. Where coaching carousals have continued in Fayette the programs struggle. Where good coaches are allowed to run a problem without interference good things happen.

Because they are better plan and simple. As well as what Lipton Bash said.

Without question (the whole post). Plus some catholic grade schools start in kindergarten, at least where my kids went they did.

To say they are better plain and simple is an oversimplification. Of course they are, there are more athletes per student (probably 3 or 4 times as many). I'm not gonna go all poor little Johnny but what chance does a school like say Newport have of ever beating NCC?

I do agree that development plays a role in the difference. However, IMO it isn't the main reason. It's similar to when folks compare test scores. You can't just say "they are smarter, plain and simple". A lot of other factors play into the results. Give me 100 kids from stable (mostly wealthy), engaged households versus 100 kids where maybe half come from similar households and who wins most always/ at most anything?

Well, I take that back. Looks like there are a few privates in the NCHSAA, not sure what the distinction is in playing in what association.

The best program in the region is Holmes ?

They don't seem to have a problem.

I see a lot of excuses. NCC doesn't have more athletes than Newport. Like I said the difference is how those athletes are developed from a young age.

I also wouldn't call a majority of NCC and HC kids wealthy.

The best program in the region is Holmes ? per my original reply, I was talking attendance classified sports. When was the last time Holmes beat CCH in football?

Like I said the difference is how those athletes are developed from a young age. Like I said previously, I agree that this is a contributing factor but it in no way explains the wide disparity.

I also wouldn't call a majority of NCC (compared to Newport/Bellvue/Dayton?) and HC (compared to Holmes?) kids wealthy.

I agree partly with this.

Same thing happens here in KY....there's 30 or so private Christian high schools that aren't part of the KHSAA...they are members of the KCSAA and only play each other.

But I wouldn't say that private schools have split away from the rest. More like a sliver.

I am very familiar with both the KCAA and KCSAA, we play multiple schools/teams from each conference in basketball. The NC independent site I posted though is a MUCH more organized entity with many large schools that play football. When you go to the NCHSAA site, it's very hard to find private schools listed among their different conferences...at least that stand out by name anyway (XX Christian, XX Catholic, ect.). So it seems to me many of the privates are not associated with the NCHSAA and have their own association.

24 eleven man football playing schools in the NCISAA with some pretty decent sized schools in that.

But now that I look at it, it seems pretty muddled still. Not sure why these football playing schools wouldn't belong to the NCHSAA.

I agree partly with this.

You realize all the best football schools in NKY in recent history are public ?

When was the last time Newport or Lloyd beat Beechwood in football? But yet Newport and Lloyd are very competitive with private school Holy Cross. So how is NCC being a smaller private school such an advantage over Newport?

Just because NCC is better every year? If it is an economic advantage then Beechwood would dominate NCC in football and everything else.

2000 - Newport HS Girls won 9th Region All A

2010 - Newport HS Boys won 9th Region Tournament

In 2009 Shelby Valley won the All A (Newport Central Catholic was eliminated by them in second round, and Shelby Valley went on the win the KHSAA State Tournament.

Next argument please...

I guess my argument is geared more toward football or other sports that require a larger team. Also, it is not an absolute but in general, the private schools have a distinct advantage over their equally sized public counterparts IMO.

As for Shelby County, didn't Norman Dale coach them? A rarity for sure.

As in "all", you mean Highlands, right?:)

NCC and CCH are the only consistent private schools in football in NKY. CCH hasn't won anything in a decade and NCC is very good but no better than Beechwood in 1A.

So again I don't see the point.
