July 9, 201511 yr It's definitely a grind. I know some who have worked the minor league ranks and it can be rough. About 5 or 6 years ago I looked into going to umpiring school in Florida but for whatever reason, I decided not to.

Because you have to give up your first born to go to the Wendlestat camp would be my first response... I know a guy who saved all his HS referee / umpire money for 2 years to go the the camp because he wants to get to the show. I wished him luck. I doubt his skin is thick enough to sustain the pressure as you climb that mountain.

Getting my degree was something I wanted to do.

The regular-season salary ranges for each classification are as follows: Triple-A: $2,600-3,500 per month Double-A: $2,300-2,700 per month Class A Full Season: $2,000-2,400 per month Class A Short-Season & Rookie: $1,900-2,100 per month Mlb umps start around $120k and Senior guys make around $350k. It might be a little higher, as the only figures I could find were from 2007. They also get about $350/day to cover meals and hotel rooms, and they typically travel first class. They also get 4 weeks off during the season. Still, it's a tough gig. Tons of travel, so you are rarely home during the season, and lots of pressure. I will always say the toughest thing I ever had to do was to call balls and strikes in college. When I played, during fall ball, scrimmages rarely had umps, so they always made the catchers work the plate. I dreaded the games I wasn't going to play in because I knew I'd have to ump. As much as I love baseball, that experience has kept me from ever umpiring again.
